Iran–Pakistan Rift: A Strategic Opportunity for India

Pakistan siding with the United States during the recent U.S. bombing of Iran has further fractured the unity of the Muslim world. For India, however, this rupture presents a strategic opportunity.
If current geopolitical signals are read correctly, the U.S. and Europe are preparing to impose severe restrictions on countries importing Russian oil. India currently sources around 40% of its oil from Russia, so such sanctions pose a serious challenge. With limited options, and Western double standards—as pointed out by India’s foreign minister—India must weigh its choices carefully.

Realistically, India’s best option may be to pivot toward Iran, even if it means defying Western pressure. By shifting some oil imports from Russia to Iran, India can not only meet its urgent energy needs but also strategically undercut Pakistan. While Iran and Pakistan are both Muslim-majority nations, they have deep-rooted sectarian and geopolitical tensions. India strengthening ties with Shia-majority Iran would put Pakistan in a diplomatically uncomfortable position.

Pakistan should have condemned the U.S. strikes on Iran to maintain credibility in the Muslim world—but its silence has left a vacuum that India can fill. This opens the door for Indian diplomacy to make inroads with Tehran and strengthen its presence in the broader region.

This is a golden moment for India to outmaneuver Pakistan, whose leadership has grown overconfident following General Munir’s recent White House meeting. Tellingly, Trump appears to be distancing himself: designating Munir’s favored terror outfit, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), as a terrorist group and dismissing rumours of a possible visit to Pakistan during the QUAD summit.

India now stands at a geopolitical crossroads. This is not just a chance to diplomatically isolate Pakistan but also to send a clear message to Trump: while India values trade with the U.S., it has other strategic options—both in oil and in regional alliances.
