Not smoke, I think thats the unburnt oxidiser based on red colour. Based on google search it uses red fuming nitric acid for oxidiser, so colour checks out.

Since this isnt airbreathing engine, combustion wont need a starter solid engine like bramhos etc do (in fact, during bramhos launch you can see the smoke trail vanish as it finishes solid motor burn and switches to liquid fuel).

Solid fuel motors can be made smokeless also (like AIM9X) but its a drawback kinetically and cost wise, so unless needed its avoided.

But shouldn't they test these interceptors against something longer ranged, an Agni-II for example??

The Live Target for the test was a PRITHVI missile which uses hypergolic fuel and unlike the Chinese who like to drop rocket parts on their population we care about our people
care kar ke kya kar liya.

Sometimes i think china is on right path.

The case bonded propellants of solid rocket motors of most of our missiles ,both strategic and tactical in nature are supplied by Premier explosives.

They have also received ToT from DRDO for Pralay's solid propellants.

Premier Explosives is working with DRDL on LRSAM, ie Project Kusha.
