Electronics and Semiconductor Manufacturing Industry

I also made the same prediction back in the early 2000s when I said that in addition to software, India needed to focus more on the hardware side but to no avail. You can blame that on Congress leadership.
no not congress but our Inc heavyweights inc. if they really wished something open in one sector they could always lobby govt to do same

No. Look at Modi. He knew what it had to be done and he did it. Congress knew it but didn’t want to do anything because they were only concerned about how to loot India legally and not care about the consequences because they were too busy building their nest eggs overseas.

Problem is with companies like TCS,HCL, wipro which act more like IT sweatshops instead of coming out with complete end to end solutions and platforms of their own.
There is no problem with these companies. They are IT services provider companies not a product-based companies. Yes, they have few products of their own too but largely their role is quite different from Big Tech companies of west.

I understand, but service sector is highly volatile until you have control over your products or better have your own products

There is no singular 1-fit-all product in Services sector. You either make custom apps (in java, dotnet, php, etc.) for each of your client or you implement one of the products (SAP, Salesforce, ERP, etc) in market for these clients.

The IT ministry is likely to seek the Union Cabinet’s approval next month for a Rs 40,000 crore package to boost local manufacturing of electronic components, industry executives and government officials aware of the development told ET.

Ummnn...I might get a lot of flak for this, but I've kind of a glass ⅚ empty attitude.

How long are we going to play this very convenient game of "it's USA/CIA/Commies/Big Tech/Soros/Left/Deep State/Right/Conspiracy"?
Okay, so let's assume all of them have conspired against us. But what groundbreaking have we done to actively counter that?

Leave aside military, today the biggest thing that China has achieved in terms of global dominance is making sure that atleast one part of the whole supply chain of everything passes through it and that too so efficiently that it becomes tough to replace it economically. It doesn't even need to choke...just a finger on a pressure point should be enough
• Medecine, especially things like APIs - 40%
• Consumer Electronics - 70%
• Semiconductors - 10%*
* It's just China's share but from a practical point of view this should be as much as 70% given it can easily take over Taiwan or atleast a complete enforce a naval blockade
• CNC Machining, especially services - 40%
• Telecom Equipment - 40%
• Renewable Energy - 50%
(figures are from my guesstimation, feel free to correct them. Tho they should be in the ballpark)

Where are we!?

Indian mentality is to have an overreliance on astrology and blaming others for problems. Until this changes nothing will change

When you're habituated to a life of a middle man , producing becomes an insurmountable problem. Like someone I read once upon a time said our industry ( industrialists to be precise ) suffers from a dhimmi syndrome.

They prefer investing crumbs to survive on crumbs. True of all industrialists across sectors. Add rent seeking at its most obnoxious form to this set of behaviour.

We need a new class of entrepreneurs.

this question has been asked and answered multiple times over the years, yet to see someone answer this in costing angle for Indian market.

something along the lines of, for a product category and price segment:

m is the cost of market research
x is the cost of prototyping
y is the cost of investment and capex
z is the cost of marketing
a-b is the range of RoI in years

may be this information exists within industry insiders, does it exist for regular people like us ?
