Let me rephrase my question; out of all the guns sold in India each year how many do you think are chambered in the calibres you mentioned (7.62 Tokarev, 6.5mm Swedish...) and how many in the four calibres I mentioned?

A new firearms manufacture has launched a 30 cal tarkov (7.62×25) pistol in India, 30.06 cal rifle is being manufactured by IOF there are a significant number of 6.5×55mm swedish, 7x57 mauser, 375 H&H Magnum in rotation mostly they are pre 1980 imports. I have personally seen 3 7x57 mauser bolt action rifles and 2 375 H&H Magnum 1 break barrel (DB) and 1 bolt action at a friend's gun shop in a small town in UP.

As for your point of 7.62x39mm getting replaced by 5.56x45mm being a solution, let me tell you something. These 6.5 lakh AKs would get adopted and would show excellent results in COIN ops; remember the first place we're seeing these are in J&K encounters. But then a LSCO would happen and suddenly we'd be looking for either an intermediate cartridge or full power round. Just like now units issued with INSAS carry AKs in encounters, we'd be using more and more M4s/SIGs in units with AK-203s. A new RFI would get released for 7.62x39mm, then RFP, tender...

Not everyone needs full power rifle, 6.5 lakh are only for rear troops, great in CI-CT ops, 5.56 injure 7.62 kill......and there you go; 7.62x39mm with iron sights in the terrain worst suited for it.

If army leadership or unit commander were half serious they could have equiped very good budget optics which are really good if cost is issue if it was not still lot of choices agar iron sight hi use karni thi toh bhai ofbbki Trichy hi kafi thior ofb Trichy pr bhi sss defence ka mod kit use kar sakte tha

As we have turned our small arms procurement night mare meanwhile Chinese have switched to qbz 191 family of assault rifle different rifle same caliber and same mechanism
Same as drdo carbine and ugram are same but caliber is different

Ironically Sig 716i is perfect for this type of terrain. AK 203 is good for CQB.

Yup, we may argue on the feasibility of 5.8x42mm vs 6.8x51mm but must agree on the flawless execution of even a suboptimal idea.

Carbine, Assault Rifle, Designated Marksmen Rifle and Squad Automatic Weapon, all using not just the same caliber but even interchangeable magazines.

Carbine, Assault Rifle, Designated Marksmen Rifle and Squad Automatic Weapon, all using not just the same caliber but even interchangeable magazines.

Carbine/assault qbz 191 rifle or cqb and mid and qbu 191 as heavy rifle and dmr for mid-long ranges both guns are same but barrel length and few difference so soldier can easily train on one rifle and operate on every one of them and it helps logistics and effectiveness

I think situation is not bleak. When shit hits the storm previously OFB babus will whine and can take hostage since they are the sole manufacturer of guns.

But today when shit hit the storm GoI can at least throw OFB to dustbin and ask ASTR, SSS, BF, Adani PLR to manufacturer guns in quantity. Even in Ammo front SSS have their export booked and Adani bhai can cook some Israeli ammos. Even ARDE can work with them to get some gun products.


But the zoo of guns is Indian Army own bullshit.
