Classical is my favorite format too but you are deluded if you think it's the most popular format even now let alone the future. Current generation has no patience to follow a 3 hour Chess game.Yeah well real chess fans and players dont really care for the faster formats. Yes, Magnus is a great one in classical too, one of the alltime greats for sure. But his days are numbered and Gukesh will get him. If not, Pragu will get him.
The pressure is on Magnus and needs to stay that way for being the second arsehole in history of chess, after Bobby Fischer, to think he is bigger than the game and gets to dictate how the rules of the games go.
So fuck him. Its like playing Dr mengele at chess with your life at stake- evil genius but whatever, man needs to go down and down he shall go. And when he does, we will erase much of what he wants to be remembered as, same as we did with Fischer. Chess fans are far more hardcore than the newly minted ones, at least the 40+ crowd is, because we all fell in love with the true chess - classical, where time crunch can be exploited more effectively than the faster formats and rewards actual creativity over rote memory compooter chess with some pattern recognition thrown in.
It's the same as Test vs T20 debate in Cricket.
Tests are the ultimate format but it has empty stadiums compared to T20 circus which fills up the stadium.
As for Magnus, of course he'll go down soon. But, casual Indian Chess fans should stop saying BS like "Gukesh should humble Magnus" etc. You only get an egg on your face when that doesn't happen.
A better way would be to say Gukesh is only 18 and is already among the top 5 Classical players in the world and he'll go on improving etc.
