IAF has ordered 97 mk1A and want 99 additional. MK2 isn’t even taken first flight and AMCA is coming after half the Air Force personnel retires so what they have to do say no to imports that to 5th gen fighter?

They also delayed tejas mk2.
Mk2 project got formal approval in 2011.
IAF only started becoming serious( more likely strongarmed into accepting it) in mk2 after 2018.
That's when the design started to evolve in the current mk2.
From 2011-2018 no serious work done on Tejas mk2 program.

Where were the engines? MK1 wasn’t enough so in 2016 they came up with MK1A and MK2. CCS had the embargo without flying MK1A wasn’t sanctioned and off course price negotiations dragged on. MK1A took first flight on Mar 28 2024. Overall both govt and IAF is to blame for delays.
