Electronics and Semiconductor Manufacturing Industry

Bureaucrats are most unsuitable for speed work. They are trained to look at rules much more than businessmen.

Time for some reality check.

Indian software firm Zoho has suspended its year-long pursuit of a $700 million plan to foray into chip manufacturing, sources familiar with the matter said, dealing another blow to the Indian government’s ambitious semiconductor plans.

Zoho struggled to find the right technology partner
required to advise on the complex chipmaking processes, one of the sources said.

Reuters reported on Wednesday that Indian billionaire Gautam Adani’s group has also paused discussions with Israel’s Tower Semiconductor for its $10 billion chip project following an internal evaluation by the Indian group.

Was Zoho planning for a fab or design company? It looks like design or OSAT/ATP plant may be. On the other hand Adani has asked more financial commitment from Tower semiconductors to go ahead with the plant. What they need is definite customers who will be willing to buy their chips for long term. Without customers or market need no one will move ahead. Maybe GoI should sit down and sort out their issues. We need another fab along side Tata.

Fab, but for compound semiconductors like GAN, GAA , etc. These have very specific uses for radars, laser diodes, medical equipments, etc. They are not the general purpose silicon chips used for computing.

Even old mobile unicorns of India like Micromax, Celkon, Karbonn were moved into EMS ecosystem. Out of them looks like Micromax is massive success. Karbonn went into Bankruptcy. Celkon is still active in its Tirupati Factory.

None of them restarted their Comeback on smartphone brand. Only LAVA is duking it out as Lone Indian Player.

We used to have 1. Micromax, Karbonn, Celkon, Yu, Intex, Lava, Xolo, Smartron. All of them got massacred by Xiaomi.

Maybe after 5 years they will be confident enough to start the brands. On the other companies like Boat, Noise were surprisingly able to dominate Indian Market. They came at the right time where manufacturing in India for Electronics is taking off. The next evolution will be doing some R&D and build their products.

This is how BYD started.
