If we get 14nm which TATA is trying we may even support Mobile phones since 14nm is still a good processor.
14nm mobile phones are gone case. Maybe Jiophone69 for exxtra poor people can have it. Even for ARM PC/ indigenous supercomputers 14nm is now just too big because of power draw and heat dissipation.
We need atleast 10nm by 2030s to tap into consumer grade power sipping 250mm2 die sized ARM PC. We need urgent PLI and R&D investment to start producing 28nm without involving imported components before 2030, or it will be too late.

Dream on….

We did not see any significant increase in so called performance/battery life which deems node like 14nm unfeasible. Again Data centres, supercomputers can be handled since the power requirement here does not matter. An cellphone will have an say on this, even 14nm still hold there. Also automobile ECU, ADAS things don't even need and complex processor size when it can run even on 28NM.

Also software optimization is a key here. Better software integration with hardware then better performance, efficiency. Lousy software is pain even for 5nm nodes.

Look processor size reduction is basically an marketing jargon for big companies like Apple, Samsung to jerk off.

What kind of difference we are seeing in terms of Processor performance and battery life when we start from 14nm to 5nm. For last few years there is only an small improvement compared to the hype they are trying to sell.

Small processors may be useful for Mobile but it is still not an major pain point in Desktop, Servers, Laptop etc.

Having an good 28NM will help us to manufacture servers which can be useful for our targets. If we get 14nm which TATA is trying we may even support Mobile phones since 14nm is still a good processor.

Leapfrogging does not going to work out here. We need to establish an 28NM process node first, Then we need to invest in our own designs and also an application to commercialize it. Currently Data centres were the new trend and if GOI wants Data centres to secure Citizens Data then we need to push for that.

Our Dehati companies were compromised and they will sell their wives to US on command.
If you are moving from 14nm to 5nm then you will see a noticeable difference in power consumption, performance and longevity for phones and desktop/laptops.

Even for desktop/laptops, 5nm processor will do wonders if coming from 14nm, it will be astronomical if coming from 28nm.

However, where it does not matter in general purpose electronics: TV, Fridge, Washing machines, Routers, Controllers, etc etc.

I am yapping about that lesser size works for Mobiles but even there is no big deal when 80% of population will simply use to watch OTT apps and social media apps. Remaining 20% is someone who use phone for productivity.
