Clever Pakistani Financial Management over years
Pakistani politicians and generals very smartly play a double game. They want to exploit either the West or China for giving them money. For more than 20 years they exploited the West (America) by pretending to help in ejecting Soviets from Afghanistan. In the process grabbed $30 billion just for helping them to arm Afghans against the Soviets. Very successful.
Very cleverly they invited Osama Bin Laden to unleash hell on America which resulted in America invading Afghanistan. That was their second opportunity back to back to exploit America by pretending to help them. In the process they grabbed another $30 billion from them.
All that money ran out when Donald Trump as President saw thru the game stopped all money transfer.
Now to Pakistanis turned towards China to grab their money. Chinese never give grants they lend you money at high interest rate and take projects as security. Pakistanis tempted them with all weather connectivity to Indian Ocean via a difficult route which passes thru mountains as high as 15,000 feet. Without a thought Chinese began building a $50 billion road to Indian Ocean. There was a catch that huge traffic is not possible thru the mountains and it is much-much cheaper to load goods in Shanghai and get them to Indian Ocean in two weeks. The cost one tenth the road costs. Did the Chinese not know that. I guess they knew but sweet talking Pakistani politicians who wished their money managed to persuade them to build it. In the long run there will be very little trade on this road but Pakistanis got a road and Chinese built it. The irony is that Pakistanis have a $50 billion loan on 6% interest which has to be paid. Otherwise Chinese will grab something very dear to Pakistan.
IMF did their calculations and said the money they give cannot be used to pay Chinese loans, use to build military and all freebies of the previous era have to go.
Well, the Pakistani public is unhappy about 40% inflation but there is no choice. Government cannot get any more loans without modifying their expense structure of military, subsidies etc.
This is their double whammy which is hard to solve. Their Army can grab the power to finance themselves or worst sell Gawadar port to Chinese in lieu of loans. Under the circumstances, the Americans may ask to get control of their nuclear bombs.
