Isro’s Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC) of Isro has recommended that Shukla be the prime Mission Pilot, with Nair serving as the backup. The final approval for their flight to the ISS will be given by the Multilateral Crew Operations Panel (MCOP). 3/n​

Both Nair and Shukla are part of the four astronaut-designates selected for India’s Gaganyaan mission, which proposes to send astronauts to space and bring them back safely. Work on the programme is ongoing. 4/n​

There’s very little actual piloting involved. You just push some buttons at the guidance of ground control only when necessary. Docking and undocking is pretty much automatic. They will be using a CrewDragon. Starliner is done and finished. Reports have come out of NASA that they will fly a CrewDragon to ISS to ferry the two stuck astronauts home while sending Starliner on a remote controlled re entry landing. That is the death knell for the Starliner program. Boeing won’t continue the Starliner program because it is a fixed cost program and they have already taken too much losses. Makes no sense to keep it going because recent issues have forced a complete redesign of the Starliner capsule.

Actually its useful for Gaganyatris to get exposure for actual process activities and space living. Helps better preparation for mission.
 

Indian astronauts complete initial training for ISRO-NASA ISS mission​

Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla (Prime) and Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair (Backup) have completed the initial training phase for the Axiom-4 mission to the ISS.​

The first phase of their training included mission orientations, ground facility tours, and SpaceX suit fittings. They also familiarized themselves with space food options, the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, and key systems onboard the ISS. Notably, the training also covered emergency preparedness, including medical emergencies, and operational routines such as space photography and communication protocols.

Looking ahead, the astronauts will continue their preparation, focusing on the US Orbital Segment of the ISS and scientific research in microgravity. They will also train in various mission scenarios aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft.

In August, Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh indicated that an Indian astronaut could be aboard the ISS by April next year, marking a significant milestone in the ISRO-NASA partnership.
