This time it is quite different.
These anti-west forces are nothing like the ones the "coalition of the willing" encountered in Iraq and elsewhere. They are well organized, well equipped, and motivated. They know how to keep the casualties to the minimum while dealing with a significantly superior air/naval power. Their supply lines are intact.
There is also a surprise factor with respect to the kind of weapon systems these insurgent groups have access to (Russian/Chinese).
Without putting boots on the ground it is highly unlikely that USA will be able to crush the enemy. US' middle eastern allies are less willing to cooperate and provide logistical support. Israel has already been tired/tied down. Will the Trump administration try to get Pakistan onboard again (against Iran)?
