Tank engine manufacturing in India - Making sense of the nonsense!

(1) July 2018 - Engine Factory Avadi claims it has fully indigenized engines for T-90 (V92S2 Engine) and T-72 (V46-6 Engine) tanks.
- It claimed that indeginous content has gone-up from 73% to 100%.

(2) October 2018 - The Defense Acquisition Council has “accorded approval for procurement of 1000 engines of 1000 BHP for fitment in T-72 tanks of the Army under ‘Buy & Make’ category and at an approximate cost of over Rs 2300 crore [$313 million]”.

(3) Jan 2020 - Avadi Ordnance Factory doubles the manufacturing capacity of Battle Tanks for Indian army from 350 to 750 per annum. Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) project has been ordered at the cost of Rs. 148.4 crores.

(4) March 2025 - The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with Rosoboronexport (RoE), Russian Federation worth $ 248 million for procurement of 1000 HP Engines for T-72 Tanks in fully formed, completely knocked down and semi knocked down conditions.

--
Question is - Which engine we're getting? And why are we getting it directly from Russia?

Some plausible answers -

(1) The backlog in Engine Factory Avadi is so much for both new engines and overhaul of existing fleet that it cannot meet the requirement of upgrading T-72 on times.

- Consider this from 2016 CAG Report on Army Base Workshops with respect to Class A vehicles, tanks and BMPs.

Our examination revealed that as of September 2015, 15,240 indents placed by CAFVD up to March 2013 were overdue for delivery against nine factories responsible for supply of spares for Class “A” vehicles.

As far as supply of spares for BMP, Tank T-72 and the engines for both these vehicles are concerned, supplies against 10499, 1,122 and 2749 indents were awaited from HVF Avadi, EF Avadi and OF Medak respectively.

These include indents outstanding against EF Avadi since 2002-03 and on HVF since 2003-04.

[ In 2016, overhaul of BMP-2s and T-72s was stuck because of Engine Factory Avadi and others could not supply something for 10+ years!]

(2) Which engine we're getting? Well, the V92S2 seems the only possible choice, the one we're supposedly 100% indigenized 7 years back!

- The ultimate victim of all this issues with Indian defense manufacturing and procurement are the Armed Forces!

Indian defense procurement is not for the beginners!

Either CVRDE scammed the public my claiming 100% indigenization. Or CVRDE still manufacture engines in 1950s era assembly line and QC is 100% poor.
No. CVRDE has indeed indigenized the V92S2 engine and uprated it from 780 to 1000hp. They replaced the turbos, fuel injectors, charged air intakes, lubrication, the whole exhaust and installed a beefier compact cooling system including new water pumps. And they tested this engine for hot climates. Problem however is, this uprating hasn't solved the loss of power in high altitude thin cold air. Now CTZ-Uraltrak has been roped in to specifically address this issue. Now, can't we just make the new engine blocks ourselves and ask the Russians for technical support. Yes, but the Russkie's smelt blood and denied to modify these old engine blocks with a simple OEM parts kit, and instead has insisted to supply whole new engines for the lot. They even forced us to buy the engine blocks as a package deal. Army does need performance out of their tanks in Ladakh and we're suddenly between a rock and a hard place. Whatever engine Russkies are supplying will be studied and reverse engineered in due time anyway, Russkies themselves know this. So they are grabbing whatever money they can get first hand.

I remember some of the regular posters were a little disappointed when these first came out, that they didn't have any ballistic protection for the gunner on the roof. Is that the situation still? I am seeing those plates on either side of the gunner in this pic, does that count as ballistic protection? Anyone more informed and knowledgeable than me care to comment please?

Avadi is much more incompetent than ofb & hal.
High time we bring in pvt sector in engine manufacturing we have the base mahindra, tata, ashok layland, force, they're are so many who can absorb this technology. Atags, whap like model needs to be followed atleast army might not be inducting them but in case of engines and spares it is in dire need so there is a huge demand. As avadi is incapable of fullfiling. Operational capabilities have been compromised because of avadi. Do read his thread guys

While that thread is right.
But this one also helps In understanding whole picture.

man...i knew basics that what we got in engine was not upto mark, but didn't know about we even got duped with gearbox 😪

perhaps they could gather guys from BEML Tata Mahindra Force Ashok Leyland Mahindra Eicher whoever the hell has experience with heavy machinery here to get a PROPER gearbox done as well ? 🤷‍♂️ it's not '80s anymore and we can crack something this time with things in hand...hopefully...
Developing a good and reliable Auto gearbox is actually very hard. Only few in auto industry are doing it, mostly American, German and Korean companies
We don’t have any local auto gearbox

Notice the symphony between OFB/CVRDE, unArmed Forces and Russians. All of them are smiling and laughing for scamming the Indian public. The Babu Factory Board will get a medium to ensure their salaries and something to chai-biskut over with. The Russian will get money for what essentially is a scrap. The Armed Babus will get benefits from both parties

Well, what can we say?

These guys were eternally TOTing the tech for decades. Anyways if noting is in hurry, at least use the DATRAN 1500HP engine which is in testing in US of A. If we got the engine right. Downsizing is not a problem. But we will not try this hard way because China is there vro.

What we want?

1. Aero engines

Do we spend money on Testing facility?

1. NO

Then get ready to wait 6 months to get an slot for testing your engine. Then work for few years to again test the engine.

What an unserious bunch of people in MOD and RM.
