Indian Economy

This information is being reported by BA Fail journalists, not government officials. It’s possible that a talkative official was contacted by the media and provided these details.

Based on some Mahindra exec, nothing has been finalised yet. BYD is hesitant to establish a complete assembly line in India and is instead seeking a port of entry to support its direct battery exports into the country more profitable to them. BYD is uncertain about the costs involved in modifying battery packs—specifically insulation and air conditioning—to suit India’s climate, where cars are exposed to sunlight for extended periods. Their current closed battery box design works well in cold, wintery conditions and even humidity, but it is not optimized for high heat. To address this, BYD would need to invest in India-specific models. However, they don’t see a strong return on investment, even if they captured the entire EV market from competitors like Tata and Mahindra. Their approach might be one step ahead of Tesla’s, but it’s unlikely to include a full assembly plant.

It seems BYD is likely conducting a feasibility study of the Indian market first. In China, BYD has adopted advanced Tesla copied manufacturing techniques and even hired floor managers from Tesla. Their vehicles are akin to a Tesla with reduced safety standards, additional features, and an open architecture that allows the CCP to monitor usage.

May be this is the first step with a promise to actual manufacturing besides the motors and batteries in future.

Since globalization almost finished, Chinese automakers would more cooperate with local brands on tech and components. CKD or SKD by BYD just for minimum brand exposure.

For example, Stellantis bought 20% of Leapmotor, VW bought 15% of Xpeng. Then they would use their EV platform to Ferrari, VW, Skode etc ...

I think same will apply to TATA or Mahindra.

Notably, boots manufactured in Bihar are now part of the Russian Army’s gear, highlighting India’s global manufacturing standards.

India aims to achieve Rs. 3,00,000 crore (US$ 34.88 billion) in defence production by 2029, reinforcing its position as a global defence manufacturing hub.

ndia is considering reducing or even ending customs duties on US automobile parts to blunt the effect of US President Donald Trump’s automobile tariffs.

Last week, Trump announced 25 per cent tariffs on all automobiles. The tariffs will come into effect on April 2 — the same date he is expected to start rolling out reciprocal tariffs. Trump has repeatedly singled out India while talking about tariffs. His sectoral tariffs as well as reciprocal tariffs in the making, in the absence of a broader understanding, may hit India hard.

That's because our income tax collection is relatively low as most of the eligible people (annadatas, small businesses, self employed people, etc) do not even pay taxes.

One of my friends in college used to receive some below poverty line scholarship. His dad was lawyer in high court, had 3 houses and 4 cars, but his dad would take most of the payments for his services in cash and real estate. Hence, he would show very little income on paper.

My father would earn 1/4th of that guy, but because he was salaried class he would pay full taxes.

Since, collecting income tax is very hard in India, govt. has been collecting taxes through indirect means (GST). This is not the most efficient way since GST is paid by everyone equally (unlike income tax where higher income people pay more), but that's the only way left with govt.

Damn, I couldn't said better than you. Neural networks were from the 1950's or 1960's. But we did not have the hardware to make it a reality. When this data hype came along in early 2010's I thought all this Data Science, Machine learning looks like glorified statistics. Yes, these things will have an impact because as a field grows there will be lot of tools which will come along and everyone adopts it if they see they can create value for their businesses.

But ever since ChatGPT came along, the amount of shit people are spewing about how AGI will become a reality is absolutely nauseating. Humanity has not created any machine which has got the situational awareness of an ant. And these morons are claiming they can create a machine as intelligent as a human brain. I always maintained, the best we can create is a narrow artificial intelligence. Calculator is a narrow artificial intelligence. It can do one thing and it can do better than humans. Did calculator replace all the accounts? No. It only augmented their skills. The same is true for LLM's. It will augment the skills of Software Engineers but not replace it.

Your Calculator analogy is incorrect. Unlike a calculator, which performs predefined operations, AI can learn, adapt, and make decisions across a vast range of tasks.
AI isn’t just about doing one thing faster—it’s about enabling machines to mimic, and sometimes exceed, human cognition across domains.

When i was in the LPG operations, the AI enabled machines could read even the dirtiest and rusted cylinders, many of which the human eye would struggle to decipher. This was 2016-2017 AI technology, when we were still using tools like Haar cascades. Today, the gap between the AI of 2017 and the AI of 2025 is comparable to the difference between the Wright brothers' plane and the F 35 5th-generation stealth fighter.

So in less than a Decade we have made a centennial jump in AI,just imagine how things will be 10 years from now.
