INS Tamala (F445), second Talwar Class (Batch III) frigate as of December 2024.

It is expected to be commissioned in the first half of 2025.

Sister ship INS Tamala is due for handover in the first quarter of 2025.

• These are not supposed to be accurate technical drawings, rather these are just scaled pictorial representation meant for things like size or number estimation.
• Only "combatants" were included; support or patrol vessels were intentionally omitted.
• Rajput, Brahmputara, Abhay and Khukri are more or less retired so left them. Also as this point adenosine has won over all the caffeine in my brain...
• In terms of future ships, NGC, NGMV and ASW-SWC were left and only S4 and Nilgiri were included as we still don't have much resource to do drafting.

Offtopic but I couldn't help be amazed at the Kirov Class Nuclear Battle Cruiser (Project Orlan II) modernization project.

Admiral Nakhimov's refit has been completed and sea trials are to begin in 2025 and return to service in 2026. The nuclear reactor has been started and it was last seen being tugged for degaussing.

In the words of one Russian Telegram channel, “The heart of the ship beats again.” This was a reference to the ship’s dormant nuclear reactor.

The ships design is derived as follows :

Leander Class > Nilgiri Class (1972) > Godavari Class > Brahmaputra Class

This makes them very top heavy and thus the two accidents we saw had the ship list to one side.

Since these ships were commissioned in the early 2000s alongside the Talwar Class (Batch I), they can easily serve until the mid 2030s with upgrades.

Since these ships were commissioned in the early 2000s alongside the Talwar Class (Batch I), they can easily serve until the mid 2030s with upgrades.

You seem really serious about it and I thought my lame joke would be enough to deter you. Damn!

Of three vessels, two have already suffered severe damage. Though one have managed to rejoin, one's still missing. The remaining lucky one got a MLU worth 300Cr...to just switch from steam to diesel.

Even if hypothetically all three vessels are restored and fitted with up-to-date propulsion then also you'll be left with multiple issues. You've got just 16x Kh-35 (apart from range the biggest issue is limited stockpile), 24x Barak-1 (good last layer ADS but pathetic to have it as primary ADS for a 4kT vessel), your radars are still 15-27rpm rotating ones, the max range for your Fire Control Radar is 30km

If you're really concerned about cost and want maximum bang for your bucks then you can probably get new, modified Saryu class patrol vessels relatively cheaply compared to [salvage + repair + re-engine + electronic/weapon upgrade] of an antique hull.

That's Nilgiri level of loadout...

Interestingly, Saryu class patrol vessels are perhaps the most stealthy design after Shivalik class.

Add panels on the mid-ship RHIB area and you might get better RCS than Shivalik.

I've never heard of any upgraded planned for them... Now that it is being refitted, could use that opportunity.

Agreed. However we still need hulls even if for the sake of numbers.

A Brahmaputra Class frigate providing localised air defence with Barak 1 missiles and stationed alongside 1-2 NGMV to protect a Kamorta Class Corvette and 4 ASW-SWC Corvettes undertaking ASW missions in the Arabian Sea is better than nothing.

A Nilgiri Class Frigate or Kolkata/Vishakapatnam Class Destroyer would provide theatre air defence using its Barak 8 missiles.

The alternative would be to divert a Shivalik or Talwar Class Frigate away from a Destroyer Squadron or CBG.

This is from an article in 2023 although the exact specifications for the upgrade are hazy.

INS Beas is the first of Brahmaputra Class Frigate to be re-powered from Steam to Diesel Propulsion. After completion of Mid Life Upgrade and Re- Powering in 2026, INS Beas will join the active fleet of the Indian Navy with a modernized weapon suite and upgraded combat capability.
