Indian Small Arms and Weapons

What a downgrade.

Should Indian state arm it's state police with automatic weapons ? (Barring a few specialist units like SOG etc)

I've always seen 26/11 as a failure of Indian security/intelligence apparatus rather than failure of Mumbai police per se. Which triggered the militarization of state police.

Please share your thoughts

You mean full auto or semi? Because they already have semis. Other than in an MG, full auto serves no tactical advantage. It ends up being a spray and pray situation.

Absolutely.
Because if not automatic weapon then what else? SMLEs?
The risk of having a bolt action rifle as your primary weapon are far more than those of having a Kalashnikov.

Are they there for policing the public or for just a government job, how much empathy they've, how corrupt are they, how much proficiency they've with all the technologies at their disposal, how physically fit they're, whats the average/median age group, how educated they're are...these are the major issue associated with a police force; weapons is just a minor one. There're example of both, people messing up despite having better weapons and succeeding effortlessly despite lacking in weapons.

If you ask me then the best weapon for policing would be a full sized SMG and pistol in 9mm, together with a 12 gauge pump action. Everyone having a pistol as secondary and primary would alternate between SMG and shotgun. With SMG you'd get the firepower of an assault rifle without the fear of over-penetration. Assault rifles would be limited to SWATs

SMG (preferably with less penetration like 9mm), shotgun & pistol, that's a great suggestion. Gets the job done. And isn't a threat to the Indian state itself

Full auto
Yeah so as I said, apart from a suppressive fire situation from an MG, full auto won't make any sense. As @Ayan Barat mentioned, semi auto weapon/ shotgun + sidearm is the combo to go with.

well state police forces are already adopting Glocks en masse, at least in my state here i see it a lot in their holsters,
so Asmi would be ideal SMG for them, for that magazine commonality and relative compactness
