Except Kerala and North east i dont think anywhere in India people focus on protein.

If u eat dal chawal sabzi what protein are you getting?

I have dated a gori and once i made her Rajma chawal during the initial days and she was like “honey where is the protein?”

And i was taken aback coz this in itself is a meal from Jammu where i belong.

That day i realised whats the reason behind gora being more genetically gifted.
Bengalis and Assamese consume a lot of protein. North India in general eats meat or whey protein.

North India despite being more vegetarian has higher average Protein Intake than South and North-East.
There is too much fear mongering about Vegetarian food these days.

1 Plate of rice -> ~6 to 8 gm protein
1 Bowl curd/raite -> ~5 to 8gm protein
1 bowl of Daal ->
  • Moong dal: ~12g
  • Urad dal: ~10g
  • Chana dal: ~14g

Now have this mean twice of thrice, you will easily have your daily quota of protein and add to it glass of milk once or twice or chacch/mattha.

Veg diet is the biggest curse for Indians. The history of North Indian veg diet(Jains/Baniyas/few other Hindu castes) is just 1000 years old. Before that all our ancestors were hardcore omnivores, be it Indus valley or the Vedas, all types of meats, fish were consumed.

Sadly, today 35-40% of children in India are stunted. Once affected, it takes 2 generations to recover.

Around the world, people are getting taller but Indians are getting shorter..

Japan was vegetarian state for a long peroid of time till the 1800s. They became a meat eating nation resulting significant inrease in their avg height due to change in protein and nutrition profile.
North and South Koreans come from the same ethnic stock, however an avg. South Korean is 2 -3 inch taller than North Korean. And this happened in just 2 generations. Till the 1970s, North was the more developed Korea. Similary, the Dutch, one of the shortest in Europe became the tallest Europeans with improved dairy farming and meat based diet.
Most data suggests that vegetarian North Indians, on average, consume more protein than the predominantly meat-eating populations in Southern and Northeastern regions.

The real issue lies elsewhere - generations of poverty have made it difficult for a large section of society to access a consistent, three-meal-a-day diet.

As economic conditions improve and a stronger food safety net is established, both the nutritional quality and overall health of these communities are likely to improve naturally.
