Despite acquiring land for constructing border roads and erecting fences, the BSF allows farmers to cultivate plots that are no man’s land. Farmers are allowed access to this land by entering through the designated gates at specifically scheduled times and after submitting their identity cards to the security guards. Cultivating tall trees on these plots poses a security threat,” said a BSF officer.

Five Indian boat operators hired by BSF to prevent cattle smuggling were arrested by BGB in Bangladesh after their boats crossed into the neighboring country.

BSF officials said on Aug 17, while attempting to stop cattle smuggling through the river, five operators of two engine-fitted country boats hired by the BSF were swept away by strong currents.

“The boat drifted into Bangladesh. When BSF officers requested the return of the Indian boat operators, BGB officers refused, citing the current situation in Bangladesh and pressure from the media,” said a senior BSF official.

It seems the authorities on other side of the border are hand-in-gloves with cattle smugglers.

The lives and freedom of fishermen, labourers and other workers need to be valued( and mourned if they are lost) as much as doctors, engineers, scientists et al. Time for BSF to be more aggressive, and make intrusions into Bangladeshi territory if need be.
