Japan says it won't sacrifice farm sector for tariff deal after Trump rice complaints​

While the auto sector is Japan's top employer and exporter, the farm sector has traditionally been an important voting bloc for Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's Liberal Democratic Party, which faces key upper house elections on July 20.
"I have repeatedly stated that agriculture is the foundation of the nation," top trade negotiator and Economy Minister Ryosei Akazawa told a press conference.
"In negotiations with the United States, our stance remains unchanged: We will not engage in talks that would sacrifice the agricultural sector," he said, adding that he would continue to negotiate with his U.S. counterparts to protect Japan's national interests.

I do not think there is a single country on this planet who can compete in a fair market - burgerboys have the capability to feed all of humanity, every year! The moment you open the doors - your domestic agri/food processing industry gets obliterated. Which is precisely why countries come up with tools to prevent that influx - some slap tariffs, the rest (like euros) force quality control checks that are rigged against the burgerboys from the get go.

If you look at it, modi is visiting every country that is. From Africa to Latin America. (And weirdly collecting their highest civilian honour lmao. It has now 26 btw) I feel they anticipate that a deal will not go through and are bracing for tariffs. I think behind the scenes, they are fast tracking deals with all other countries as soon as possible. I believe the EU FTA might come soon. Heck, we might even cozy up to Chinese or shit.
