P-17A Nilgiri Class Frigates

Keel of the second of three advanced stealth frigates was laid on Jan 24th 2020 at GRSE.
The keel is the lengthwise structure along the base of a ship, supporting the framework of the whole.

Vice Chief of Naval Staff (VCNS), Vice Admiral G Ashok Kumar commended the city-based Defence PSU for its commitment in providing maintenance support to the ships built by it.

'GRSE can be proud of its achievements as it continues to build complex ships under stringent timelines,' he said in his address during the keel laying ceremony.
The officer said the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard are on a growth path, thus boding well for the shipyard's future wherein quality ships are expected on time.

The keel laying for the second frigate was achieved ahead of schedule, a GRSE official said.

The contract of Rs 19,294 crore for construction of three highly advanced stealth frigates under Project 17A is the largest ever order won by the company, the official said.
The contract was signed between the Ministry of Defence and GRSE on February 20, 2015.

The first ship is expected to be delivered in 2023 and the next two ships in 2024 and 2025 respectively, the official said.

P17A ships are state-of-the-art guided missile frigates, each of which is 149 metres long, with displacement of approximately 6,670 tonnes and a speed of 28 knots.

These frigates are being built deploying the latest integrated construction methodology with enhanced pre- outfitting to enhance quality and reduce build periods considerably, the official said. PTI AMR NN NN

Indian Navy Project 17A (P17A) Nilgiri-class Frigates

Project 17A (P17A)-class is a new class of stealth frigates under construction for the Indian Navy as a follow-on of the Project 17 (P17) Shivalik-class frigates currently in service.

A total of seven ships are planned, out of which four will be constructed by Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in Mumbai and remaining three by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata with MDL as the lead yard. The construction times for the frigates will be reduced and productivity will improved by using modular integrated construction.

The P17A class frigates are being built using indigenously developed steel. Construction of P17A ships differ in the very concept of warship building by way of adoption of the modern technology ‘Integrated Construction (IC)’ where the blocks are pre-outfitted before joining to reduce the build period of warships. When commissioned the platforms will enhance the combat capability of the Indian Naval fleet.

The P17A class frigates will have enhanced stealth features, and will also feature better roll stabilisation and a discreet visual profile. These ships are being built using indigenously developed steel and fitted with state-of-the-art weapon and sensor systems along with advanced Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS).

The 6,670-tonne frigates will be equipped with Barak 8 long range surface-to-air missile (LR-SAM), BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, EL/M-2248 MF-STAR multi-function active electronically scanned array (AESA) naval radar system, Ajanta electronic warfare (EW) system and Humsa-NG sonar.

Each P17A frigate will be powered by two GE LM2500 marine gas turbines and two diesel engines in a combined diesel or gas (CODOG) turbine configuration. The Industrial and Marine Gas Turbine division of the state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is assembling the LM2500 gas turbines in India under license from GE (General Electric).

The crew complement of the frigates will be reduced from the existing 257 (including 35 officers) to about 150 by using high levels of automation, which will reduce the operational costs by around 20 per cent and result in higher operational availability of the warships.

OP: @Super Flanker:

Nilgiri class frigates have various types of armaments depending on the type of role.
1. For anti-air role, there are 4×8 cells for 32 Barak 8ER.
2. For anti-surface role, there are 8 cells for Brahmos.
3. For anti-submarine warfare, there are 2 torpedo launchers (triple tube) for Varunashtra torpedoes and 2 RBU-6000 launchers.

It has a 76mm OTO Melara main gun and two Ak-630M CIWS.

MDL is building four frigates under P-17A, their first ship ‘Nilgiri’ is set to be delivered in the middle of next year (2024), and then subsequently 1 ship each year thereafter. The fourth ship under MDL will be delivered in the middle of FY28.

GRSE is building three frigates under P-17A, their first ship ‘Himgiri’ is set to be delivered around August 2025, and then subsequently 1 ship every 6 months thereafter.
