Fuck man, I was in Pahalgam few months ago

Few things I noticed :

• Old generation (boomers) hate Modi & love Vajpayee. Also they will support PDP / NC over BJP even if Modi gives them 10 Cr.
• New generation doesn't care much and are happy that tourists are coming and business is booming (dhandho).
• Police & Army presence in upper reaches (where tourists visit) is minimal to nonexistent. I saw a single Army post of ~20 personnel in the middle of nowhere.
• I saw suspicious persons (well you know) roaming freely. Yep. We were advised to mind our own business and don't get "involved", this is between Army and them. Apparently they will not bother tourists and we have no business getting involved in the politics of Kashmir.

So yeah, these types of incident was waiting to happen I am afraid.

I went only in july too but my impression was the opposite of yours. I didn't feel unsafe or anything suspicious anywhere and the idea that tourists will not be targeted because it will be a massive self goal for the locals was spot on. Saw huge army convoys pass multiple times with nary a fuss from anyone and regarding Army deployment we went to the remotest area possible and had to show aadhar at least 6 times. It's a huge ass border but to say patrolling or Army presence is lax is way, way off the mark.

GoI has deployed forces (CRPF) on the expected areas, Amarnath Yatra route is absolutely bustling with Army & CRPF every year. They picked a off-beat tourist area ~30 mins - hour away from nearest security outpost.

During the yatra, these ridges in pahalgam are dominated by ITBP, I wonder if there can be a permanent deployment of ITBP in south kashmir and western doda/kishtwar axis

Where did you go in Pahalgam ? Pahalgam town itself is safe and ofc filled with forces.

Did you go to upper reaches ? How many days did you stay ? Perhaps trekked the upper valleys ? Interacted with local shepherds and people of the small villages ?
