We overestimate the hand to hand fighting capabilities of soldiers. There is a ufc fighter named sean strickland he invited a Navy seal for sparring and absolutely beat the shit out of him. You fight well with what you practice the most, like a ufc fighter will get absolutely owned in a firefight but a special forces guy with little hand to hand experience will get knocked out or submitted within seconds against a ufc fighter.Absolutely.
The self-defense classes and the gym memberships are worthless in a real street fight. It is highly likely that the attackers maintained a safe distance from their victims to mitigate any snatching attempt.
A disorganized mob of 50 people (armed/unarmed, doesn't matter) is extremely ineffective against a well-trained/organized group of 4-5 armed terrorists, that is why the military has a command structure. Even the most seasoned soldiers are ineffective while working outside a proper chain of command.
Don't forget the fact that one of the victims was a trained soldier.
