depends where and how it was hit.
Back in ww2 era, planes used to return riddled with bullet holes that made the plane body look like a bullet-ridden wall in palestine.
Like you can take a glancing blow, maybe part of the wing blew off and he had stabilizer damage, not critical system damage, so was able to land the plane. and then they fixed the wing.
Or something of that type.

My 'best guess' is that MiG-21 doesnt have a missile good enough to lock on and kill a F16 but it sure as hell is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay faster than a F16 ( Mig-21 is faster than even a Su-30 or F-22 without afterburners- its an interceptor, not an air superiority fighter. Its job is to run up to you, catch u( ie intercept) and hit u over the head at close range). And it has a big honking machine gun in it.

So my best guess is, abhinandan did a nose to nose run straight at the F16, closed the gap really fast and straight up shot him full of bullets - the F16 took some non critical bullet hits, promptly fucked off and semi-crash landed somewhere ( semi-crash landing = you manage to land a damaged plane in a controlled crash scenario).
