War in Ukraine; no peace as yet.
During Donald Trump’s tenure in the White House, his administration initiated a peace proposal aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Although the specifics of this plan were not publicly disclosed, it reportedly involved delaying Ukraine’s NATO membership by 20 years and deploying European peacekeepers in the region.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky initially found the proposal unacceptable but faced pressure to acquiesce, leading to its submission to Moscow for consideration. However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed dissatisfaction with key elements of the plan, particularly the postponement of Ukraine’s NATO membership and the proposed deployment of peacekeeping forces.
Consequently, the conflict persisted, with only a marginal reduction in hostilities. Media reports indicated that all three parties—the U.S., Ukraine, and Russia—were retreating from the peace initiatives, leaving the situation at an impasse. Complicating matters, President Trump was preoccupied with implementing widespread tariffs on numerous countries, including China, the European Union, and the UK, which diverted attention from the Ukrainian conflict.
As a result, the war in Ukraine continued, albeit with a slight decrease in intensity.
