Honestly, one of the biggest disasters of the Congress era. What was even the point of supporting the Eelam? Just a huge clusterfuck from the government. We didn't gain anything out of that.

With ltte and other elam groups we could have some strategic depth within srilanka .

It wouldn't have been ideal, if they formed their own country or if they remained as rebel groups. As we have seen with pakistan, these militant groups often cause more harm. That's one of the reasons Iran doesn't support Azerbaijan even though both are islamic but supports a Christian Armenia, due to the presence of Iranian azeris. It would have been better to inflitrate most of the political parties in Sri Lanka discretly and keep some of their politicians on payroll, so that our interests wouldn't have been harmed regardless of who was in power there.
