QUANTUM TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH CENTRE
INAUGURATED AT METCALFE HOUSE, DELHI

The Solid State Physics
Laboratory (SSPL), Delhi, marked
a significant quantum leap in
defence technologies with the
inauguration of the Quantum
Technology Research Centre
(QTRC) by Dr Samir V Kamat,
Secretary, Department of Defence
R&D & Chairman DRDO on 27
May 2025 at Metcalfe House,
Delhi.
By focusing on foundational
technologies with far-reaching
implications, the SSPL played
a crucial role in this initiative,
QUANTUM TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH CENTRE
INAUGURATED AT METCALFE HOUSE, DELHI
marking a significant stride for
India’s strategic technological
advancements. The Centre will
serve as a central hub, focusing on
conducting quantum experiments
in key areas such as secure
communications, advanced
materials,timekeeping, and
sensing.
Spearheaded by SSPL, QTRC is
focused on developing innovative
technologies, specifically an
ultra-small atomic clock based
on coherent population trapping
for highly precise timekeeping in
global navigation satellite system-
denied environments, an atomic
magnetometer using an optically
pumped magnetometer for ultra-
sensitive magnetic field detection,
and cutting-edge solid-state
quantum devices and materials.
The key capabilities of the center
also include characterisation of
vertical-cavity surface-emitting
lasers and distributed feedback
lasers; testbeds for evaluating
single-photon sources; and
setup for characterisation of
microfabricated alkali vapour cells.
Spearheaded by the ScientificAnalysis Group (SAG), Delhi, and the Joint Cipher Bureau (JCB), Delhi, QTRC is equippedwith cutting-edge experimental platforms to develop and validate
Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) techniques, enabling ultra-securecommunication and protecting national security in the post-quantum era.The inauguration ceremony was graced by Smt Suma Varughese, Director General (MED CoS &
Cyber Systems), whose vision and leadership were instrumental in conceptualising the cutting-edge facility; Dr Manu Korulla, Director General (Resource & Management); Dr Meena Mishra,
Director, SSPL; Dr N Rajesh Pillai, Director, SAG; senior scientists; and other dignitaries.
