People have been highly critical of starting metro projects in many Indian cities, citing that ridership is not sufficient and investment is not recoverable.

Most said that We have to develop cities first and then bring Metro projects to the cities or have Metro-Neo & Metro-Lite system instead.

However Indian is not exactly that kind of place. Here we have to build something big first and then see the development of the area around.

Lately, Metro ridership has shut-up most of the dissidents. We are having record ridership in Delhi Metro, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bangaluru and even in the small Jaipur Metro system.

Will be compiling the data soon.

Indian masses are what should I say ......... they are kinda dumb.
Most who make such statements don't give a minutes thought on what they are going to say.

We have a opinion about everything but have knowledge and involvement in none.

Sometimes I have feeling that we don't deserve development.

In Bangalore, there was a demand for that newly inaugurated Double Decker Flyover Road for over a decade.

Now when it is inaugurated and in full use, people are complaining that why it is made! it is causing issue for the residential building around it!

Kochi Metro is clocking over 1 lakh ridership per day recently. July month also saw over 1lakh footfall many days, now September is seeing it continuously (party due to Onam):

Chennai Metro is seeing over 3.5Lac per day ridership now. It was one of the systems seen as a push from center and State political parties propagating hate for it and keeping the pace of construction abysmal.

However now, it is seeing surge in footfall and with around ~150KM in construction, will become the largest Network in South India with around 279 KM of track length surpassing Bangaluru with network of 220KM.

Chennai has a population of 12 million people and NYC and Moscow with similar population numbers have daily ridership of at least 4 million and 8 million respectively a day.

Non comparable cities and culture. US and Russia is not built for Bus transport and favor either personal cars or subway systems.

In case of Chennai, it was one weird city where Metro was not seen as pride and propagated as white elephant installed by Naarthie Center Govt. Only recently it is seeing a surge in usage and footfall.

We have keep in mind the context. So many of these smaller Metro system in the country were having abysmal use for long time and only now with proper increment in track length and opening some important stations in bigger network it has suddenly become one of the best ways to travel inside the cities.

That's the problem with most metros. They are built too small to be of any effective use. You gotta go big all the way and make no compromise as to the size of length and breadth.
