BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhua) -- China's foreign exchange reserves have remained above 3.2 trillion U.S. dollars for 16 straight months, official data showed Monday.

The reserves amounted to 3.2407 trillion U.S. dollars at the end of March, up by 13.4 billion dollars, or a 0.42-percent rise, from the previous month, according to the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE).

The SAFE attributed the steady performance to the overall stability and continued recovery of the Chinese economy, the effect of existing and new policy measures, and progress in high-quality development. ■

The imposition of tariffs on steel nails from China is the latest update to special tariffs on products from the Asian country in the last four months. A 19 percent tariff on products arriving in Mexico through Chinese digital platforms went into effect on January 1.

This tariff, applied to platforms from countries without a free trade agreement, such as China, affected the country's e-commerce giants, such as Shein and Temu.

Likewise, in mid-December 2024, Mexico imposed a 35 percent tariff on clothing products manufactured in China and other countries with which it does not have a free trade agreement.

At the time, Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard explained that the measure was intended to end abuses by companies that generate unfair competition in the textile market, putting domestic trade at a disadvantage.

The temporary increase to 35 percent of the tariff on 138 types of manufactured goods, as well as the 15 percent increase on imported textile goods from China and other countries, has been in effect since this year.
