The only leader who have one ball of iron is Putin.
It is due to lack of nuclear weapon during those times that countries could plan for extensive wars.
The powers back then, just like now, had a huge number of men at their disposal and the cities were insulated from massive attacks because there were no weapons or delivery systems credible enough to vaporise cities if the enemy so willed.
So leaders could plan for wars, which in reality have actual attrition rates of 4%, which is not too bad a prospect if you consider the benefits of war like annexation of new territories, new resources unlocked etc.
Nowadays, there are no territories to be unlocked or annexed, because the powers that have manpower and the bomb, also have nuclear equipped enemies, so that option went out of the window.
The only reason wars are fought now are for bragging rights (if you think deeply). And of course, how far will you go for bragging rights?
Therefore these short and useless wars. It is however interesting to note how Sanatan Dharma history showed that wars which appear for bragging can also be converted to massive ones. Let's go to Mahabharat.
Consider Virat Yuddh, and Kurukshetra Yuddh. Both had same warring sides (somewhat, though most Pandavs missing), but their motivation was completely different, the outcomes were completely different, even the manpower involved were orders of magnitude different. It too could have been easily a short one until the Kauravas ceded five villages. But Pandavs under Sri Krishna made Dharma (right vs wrong) their main goal in this war and thereby, exceeded the love for all low hanging fruits of short sweet results and went for the complete annihilation.
This is the only way even in today's world we can battle without folding so easily, by aligning our cause to Dharma, whatever is right vs whatever is wrong.
This is the reason I find dhando fanbois, national interests fanbois so deplorable. They have a lot of disregard for our lived experiences, our ancient wisdom and also - Dharma itself.
Caveat: I don't advocate every short skirmish to be a Mahabharat. But when your leaders are doing Mahabharat like rhetoric, it better be a Dharmayuddh.
