What a tragic waste of precious mangoes—Why is transport so expensive? It’s a serious concern, and one can only imagine how much food is wasted across the country due to this issue.

It's not really transportation, it's the lack of cold storage that is the issue. Monsoon has come, the quality of mangoes would degrade. Thus prices will plummet and farmers won't be able to justify transportation cost vs the market price of mangoes. They have to operate at thin profit margin. Procurement process is also pretty bad in India. Farm laws were supposed to fix a significant chunk of these issue. But some rascal rich farmers and buffoons following them from Punjab and Haryana decided to hurt the farmers of whole India for their own selfishness. Bhajipao & Leader ji folded like paper before them. Since then there have been very little radical reforms when it comes agriculture. Because governments fear protests.

Nobody in Odisha, Bengal or even Chhattisgarh protested that much. Except a few INC cadres who had a meme protest in some corner which didn't even worked in that area, because lack of local support..

These kind of protests are managed by opposition parties … a farmer knows value of a produce a political farmer cant

Thats seems like an obvious media PR aka easy protest thats why we r discussing it here.

Indian farmers on an average receive highest subsidies when we look per capita income.

Indian farmers receive 4500 USD of subsidies in an year higher than even some advanced economies

Farmers all over the country do this now.

I have seen onions thrown on highways the same way, tomatoes and even milk.

I don't know which region's farmers started this trend.

It is not political, it is only a drama to show their outrage( gets media attention ), since otherwise your admin doesn't care i guess.

Really sad they get screwed over this way and they have to do all this just to get attention from politicians and babooze to resolve their issues

just in case FYI, core of the issue is that, in punjab farmers are not allowed to sell their produce listed in MSP items outside of mandis. where as in other states, farmers can sell what ever where ever they want.

from an economic stand point what it does is, in punjab there is less incentive to diversify from MSP listed crops. where was in other states, market economics take over, and farmers adjust their sowing as per market demand.

as a result, one of the long term effects for punjab, because the state government kept pumping money to pay for MSP they started taxing the industry to pay for it. so industry moved to near by states, to haryana, delhi, U.P etc even tamil nadu in case of textiles. net result deindustrialisation of punjab, punjab stagnated and nearby states grew in economic parameters.

which is why we see so many people from punjab moving to gora countries.

Second point - have my own doubt. No body harvest perfectly ripe mangos. they are always harvested few days prior to cover for transport days and time to market.

Still, problem is we have no place to store any agriculture product. I wonder what food processing ministry is doing while industry do try to take as much as it can...

that article is focussing on pulp processing supply chain in chitoor, not the mangoes we eat in our homes. unless you have insights into that particular industry in that particular area, i suppose we have to take word of the farmer who gave that statement in that article.

Still, problem is we have no place to store any agriculture product. I wonder what food processing ministry is doing while industry do try to take as much as it can...

once market economics have been established, why do you want to gormint to intervene ?
the less the gormint intervenes in established supply chain cycles the better.

as per that article, gormint has already intervened years ago by over supplying totapuri and alphonso saplings in that area which created this glut in the first place.

Mspkhori strikes again, it same thing destroying ground water levels in Punjab, you give high msp to certain crop and now every farming is growing it like crazy and you can't even reduce msp, otherwise they will chimp out.

The result is finally this, where there is no buyer and we get these news of farmers throw x crop on road.

If we are expecting that pvt players will come and help farmers than we are fools... they are not doing any social service per se...moreover if there are storing facilities available, both can benefit as well and get rid of this low / high yield cycle..

Well the problem here is there isn't demand for those mangoes, ideally farmers need to divest from it and focus on something else. Issue here is gormint is poking it's finger in both supply and demand side.
