The first low-altitude aircraft wind tunnel in China is now operational.

On July 16, in Guangzhou, the first composite wind tunnel in China focused on aerodynamic research for low-altitude aircraft was officially completed and put into operation at the Guangdong Aerospace Technology Research Institute (referred to as "Guangtian Institute"). This wind tunnel fills the infrastructure gap from laboratory research to real-world scenario validation for low-altitude aircraft, marking a new breakthrough in the construction of basic research platforms for the low-altitude economy in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

As a device that artificially controls airflow, wind tunnels are primarily used for systematic testing of aviation vehicles. Compared to outdoor scenario testing, wind tunnel testing offers advantages such as shorter testing cycles and lower costs.

"The wind tunnel test involves fixing the aircraft to the equipment, allowing airflow to move, thus achieving relative motion and accurately measuring various technical parameters of the aircraft during flight," explained Sun Liangbao, the technical head of the wind tunnel at Guangtian Institute. This wind tunnel will undertake the core task of comprehensively verifying the wind resistance safety of aircraft.

This wind tunnel integrates traditional aviation wind tunnel technology with a drone wind wall testing system, making it the first 4.5-meter-class wind tunnel in China specifically for studying and testing the aerodynamic characteristics of low-altitude aircraft. Its operation will provide efficient and convenient "local" testing services for low-altitude aircraft R&D companies, reducing the time from coordination to experiment completion to just 3-4 months, significantly lowering R&D costs and accelerating the transformation of technological breakthroughs into commercial applications.

On the same day, a comprehensive testing ground for all-space unmanned systems was also put into operation, divided into a physical testing ground and a digital testing ground. The physical testing ground consists of a 33 square kilometer airspace, vertical takeoff and landing areas, taxiways, a 5G-A integrated sensing network, wind measurement radar, and more. The digital testing ground includes a collaborative design platform, a supercomputing center, a digital twin center, and an all-space unmanned system management service platform.

According to reports, Guangtian Institute has already received testing requests from over ten entities, including Shenzhen Customs, XPeng Heitech, and Weikai Testing. In the future, Guangtian Institute plans to establish a "Bay Area No. 1" wind tunnel testing data sharing platform and will collaborate with low-altitude aircraft R&D institutions, universities, and companies to continuously tackle key technologies for low-altitude aircraft and jointly build a standardized testing system for low-altitude aircraft wind tunnels.
