ADA Tejas Mark-II/Medium Weight Fighter

Something I posted in another forum

India operates an abysmal procurement system, so bad that the IAF has been starved of fighters. Successive governments have clung onto a state-owned monopoly in fighter production. Now there is serious talk of involving the private sector in fighter production since the IAF, already down to around 30 squadrons (instead of the 42 sanctioned) will need to retire at least a dozen more fighter squadrons in coming years. IAF will need hundreds of fighters to reach 42 squadron level. There is no real prospect of HAL, India's sole existing fighter supplier, 'delivering the goods'.

L&T, a large Indian private player already supplying wings for the Tejas Mk1A,, has expressed an interest in producing fighters, until now the preserve of HAL. The shortage of fighters promises to become so acute that it is speculated that perhaps 300 Tejas Mk2 could be ordered, representing at least $20 billion in business just for the flyaway aircraft. With that number of frames involved good economies of scale could be harvested and a good profit made by L&T. India could even become a net exporter of fighters!

From Indian media, so of dubious accuracy:

Yeah, you and me both know its not gonna happen.
We're ultimately gonna make some more compromise, to get the deal done.
That's what will happen.

The source you've quoted isn't mainstream media , it's a discussion board like ours.

Thanks for the info. I think you are newish on this forum. Could you point me to any Indian source of information that (a) only presents facts as facts (b) identifies sources (c) covers military aviation? I would appreciate that.

These things are always cluttered with rumours. In the era of social media when everyone wants clicks and visitor count there is very less space of a and b mentioned above.

That's what we are here for. To dissect news & make sense of it to green horns like you . You seem to be new around here .

Yea. Only been following LCA since about 2008 (before Tejas Mk2 was started.)
Some of us have been following it from the mid 1980s when the program only just started & they were young. Stick around, you may yet learn a thing or 2 from them.

BTW the post was from nearly a week ago. What's the matter? Nothing much to do on a Saturday evening?

By the way, the projected squadrons of the total "We need 60 Squadrons talk is"

1. Su-30MKI: 272 @15-Squadrons
2. Tejas mk1+mk1A(Batch-1) +(Batch-2): 220 @ 12-Squadrons
3. Tejas mk2: 250 @ 14- Squadrons
4. AMCA: 200 @ 11-Squadrons

Wouldn't it be better to scrap Batch-2 of Mk1A and put those numbers in to Mk2 totalling 300? The cost of AMCA would also come down since most of the sub components are shared?

Because to fulfill all those 87 Batch-1 orders HAL would take atleast 5 years, I don't trust those 24 per year numbers since GE still didn't deliver any engines and I don't believe they can scale from present 12 to 24 quickly enough.

By that time Mk2 would be ready.
