The order for eight Embraer E190-E2s placed by Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (VARA) in August marks a significant shift in the Australian air transport market for the mining sector, known as Fly-In Fly-Out (FIFO), according to Cirium.

For decades, this market has relied on the use of older aircraft for low-utilisation operations. These new aircraft will replace the Fokker 100s still operated by the airline.

Western Australia is a key region for the extraction of minerals such as iron, nickel-copper and gold. Numerous mining sites in the country's interior rely on air connections to transport workers, usually to and from Perth.

For example, at Christmas Creek Mine, a Fokker 100 operates daily round-trip flights on a 1 hour 40 minute journey. Runways may be paved or unpaved, with minimal infrastructure typically including only a parking apron and basic amenities.

FIFO flights typically employ regional aircraft, including jets such as the Airbus A319/A320 and the De Havilland Canada Dash 8.

The market for large regional jets in Australia has grown from approximately 80 aircraft a decade ago to over 100 today. These aircraft are used both on scheduled flights and on charter contracts for FIFO operations.

The Fokker 100 has been the core of this fleet, operated by Alliance Airlines, Network Aviation and VARA. At its peak in 2018, the Fokker 100 fleet numbered 56 aircraft, but has now been reduced to 43, mainly because VARA reduced its fleet from 21 to seven aircraft.

Network Aviation, owned by Qantas and operating as QantasLink on scheduled and charter routes, has 14 Fokker 100 aircraft, plus Airbus and one E190.

Australia has also emerged as a key market for used E190s.

Alliance Airlines, which operates 21 Fokker 100s and 10 Fokker 70s, has been growing its E190 fleet. It has acquired 67 aircraft, initially from American Airlines and Copa Airlines, and is currently adding 30 ex-JetBlue aircraft, which are expected to be completed by mid-2026 through AerCap.

Not all of these aircraft will enter service, as Alliance has sold some airframes and engines after using them as a source of spares.

Alliance currently has 30 E190s in operation, using them for both FIFO flights and QantasLink, where Qantas owns a stake in the airline.

National Jet Express has also expanded its E190 fleet to seven, replacing its aging BAe 146s.

The Australian market continues to offer opportunities for the addition of more E190s, especially as replacements for the Fokker 70/100s.

In addition, the introduction of the E190-E2 could signal a promising long-term future for next-generation aircraft.

 
ENGLAND - The State of Querétaro and Airbus Helicopters signed, during the first day of the Farnborough Air Show, a cooperation agreement to expand Airbus' industrial activities and new production processes in Mexico.

This agreement will allow Airbus to increase the industrial capacity of its manufacturing plant in the state.

This industrial expansion and new processes will contribute to the increase in Airbus' single-aisle commercial aircraft production and will increase the workforce to around 800 employees by the end of the decade.

The spatialization of the plant is the manufacture of aircraft doors using state-of-the-art, high-tech machinery, including a new riveting center for drilling and riveting the exterior cladding to the door structures and a high-precision drilling machine to install the door hinge to the fuselage.

Marco Antonio Del Prete Tercero, Secretary of Sustainable Development of Querétaro, on behalf of Mauricio Kuri González, Governor of the State, and Laurent Mazoué, Executive Vice President of Operations of Airbus Helicopters, signed the cooperation agreement during the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom.

“Today marks an important milestone for both the State of Querétaro and Airbus Helicopters with the expansion of our industrial plant, as part of the transformation of our global supply chain, but also to meet the growth of Airbus' single-aisle commercial aircraft,” Laurent Mazoué, Airbus Helicopters' Executive Vice President of Operations said.

Bombardier begins production in Mexico of the Global 8000, the fastest aircraft since the Concorde


Bombardier announced that manufacturing of the major structural components for the first production aircraft is underway at Bombardier facilities in Saint-Laurent, Québec; Red Oak, Texas; and Querétaro, Mexico. Scheduled to enter service in the second half of 2025, the Global 8000 business jet will be the world’s longest-range and fastest commercial jet, innovatively designed with the smoothest ride and healthiest cabin in the industry.
The aircraft also continues to impress in flight testing, achieving positive results throughout its campaign. The Global 8000 aircraft will be the fastest civil aircraft since Concorde and will enter service in 2025.

T-25 Universal: a milestone in Brazilian Military Aviation

The T-25 Universal is an icon of Brazilian military aviation, developed by Neiva (later acquired by Embraer) in the 1960s. With a capacity for two crew members and a simplified design, the aircraft stood out for its reliability, robustness and ease of maintenance, essential for pilot training.

Its engine offers adequate performance for basic and advanced training missions. Versatile, the T-25 has been used for navigation and tactical maneuver training, in addition to other support missions. Since 1972, the Lagoa Santa Aeronautical Material Park has assumed responsibility for the maintenance and support of T-25 aircraft, including parts management and logistics.

With a legacy of pilot training and a modernization that guarantees its relevance, the T-25 Universal remains a fundamental pillar in FAB training aviation, reflecting the Air Force's commitment to innovation and operational autonomy.

The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) is celebrating a historic milestone this Thursday (12/05) with the first official flight of the modernized prototype of the T-25 Universal aircraft. The feat, carried out by the Lagoa Santa Aeronautical Material Park (PAMA LS), under the supervision of the Aeronautical and War Material Directorate (DIMAB), in partnership with the Industrial Development and Coordination Institute (IFI) and the Flight Research and Testing Institute (IPEV), represents the realization of visionary and dedicated work.

The Air Force Commander, Air Force Lieutenant Brigadier Marcelo Kanitz Damasceno, participated in the ceremony, together with other members of the High Command, among other military personnel.

In his speech, the Air Force Commander highlighted the advantages of modernizing the aircraft. “The inaugural flight of the T-25M, now equipped with new technologies, symbolizes the Air Force’s commitment to innovation, efficiency and, above all, to the excellent training of our future pilots. For more than five decades, the T-25 Universal has been responsible for the first flight hours of thousands of Aviators, going beyond the mission initially intended for it. The beginning of the modernization of this fleet demonstrates the ability to reinvent itself, using its own resources to ensure that our mission of serving the country is fulfilled with the highest quality. With the modernization, we will provide our Cadets with the opportunity to fly even more safely. Congratulations to all the professionals involved who, with dedication and competence, made this modernization possible”, highlighted the General Officer.

The modernization of the T-25 Universal aims to strengthen the national capacity for aeronautical development and production, providing the FAB with a state-of-the-art training aircraft for the training of the next classes of aviators, especially at the Air Force Academy (AFA).

Modernization: Updating systems and the impact on pilot training

The modernization process of the T-25 Universal, which is now called the T-25M, includes several improvements to its structure and technology. The main objective was to increase the aircraft's operability, bringing it up to the most advanced technological standards, while at the same time remaining accessible for cadet training. Among the most significant updates are the replacement of the electrical and electronic systems, which received state-of-the-art equipment, and the complete renewal of the wiring.

The structural modification of the aircraft's instrument panel was another important point. The new configuration reduces vibration and facilitates the installation of new components, which results in an aircraft that is 50 kg lighter and, consequently, with a greater payload capacity. This update not only improves the aircraft's performance, but also contributes to operational savings, a crucial factor in times of tight budgets.

Innovative Technologies: A New Level for Navigation and Safety

The modernization project incorporated several cutting-edge technologies, such as the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), which ensures precise navigation, the Terrain Awareness and Warning System (TAWS), which increases safety during flight, and STORMSCOPE, which allows the identification of storms and other adverse weather conditions. The ADS-B system, which transmits position and other flight parameters in real time, was also integrated, providing greater safety and efficient communication with Air Traffic Control.

In addition, the aircraft's internal and external communication was improved with the installation of new digital systems, offering superior clarity and signal strength. The digital engine parameter monitoring system, with audiovisual speed alerts, also contributes to the safety and efficiency of flight operations.

Akaer selected to produce the structures of the LUS-222 aircraft
Akaer, a leading Brazilian company in innovation in the areas of Defense and Aerospace, was selected by the Portuguese company EEA Aircraft and Maintenance, S.A. to produce the structures of the LUS-222 aircraft.

Akaer will be responsible for manufacturing, in Brazil, the fuselage, complete wing, horizontal and vertical stabilizers and also all of the aircraft's control surfaces.

The LUS-222 is a light regional aircraft, developed for civil and military uses, for the global market. The LUS-222 Program is led by EEA Aircraft and Maintenance and has the participation of several companies in the Portuguese aeronautical ecosystem, with support from the country's Air Force and the Government of Portugal.

Akaer will be the first Brazilian company to supply the entire structure of a regional transport and cargo aircraft. Production will take place in São José dos Campos (SP) from the first quarter of 2025. The first flight of the LUS-222 is scheduled for 2027.

“We are very pleased to have been able to create this partnership with Akaer for the manufacture of the aerostructures for the LUS-222 aircraft. Portugal and Brazil have a very successful partnership history in the aeronautical sector, especially with the KC-390 Program, in which the Brazilian industry, with the help of Portuguese partners, developed an aircraft that was integrated by the Portuguese Air Force. We may now be able to replicate this in reverse with the LUS-222 aircraft, led by EEA Aircraft and Maintenance, with Akaer as a partner and who knows, in the future, with the Brazilian Air Force and other civil operators from the huge country of Brazil as end users,” said Miguel Braga, Chairman of the Board of Directors of EEA Aircraft and Maintenance.

The aircraft
The LUS-222 is a twin-engine, high-wing aircraft with a rear cargo door. It has the capacity to transport 19 passengers or up to 2,000 kg of cargo, and can be used in military, search and rescue, transport and regional aviation missions.

Its ability to operate on short, unpaved runways makes it ideal for remote and difficult-to-access regions, offering an efficient solution for various types of operations.

The aircraft has a range of over 2,000 km and can reach a speed of up to 370 km/h.

Akaer selected to participate in the production of the C-390 and the Praetor 600
Akaer, a leading Brazilian company in innovation in the aerospace sector, will participate in the production of the C-390 Millennium freighter (defense aircraft) and the Praetor 600 jet (executive aircraft), two of Embraer's main aircraft. The contract was signed this month and is valid for five years, with the possibility of renewal.


“We are honored to be part of these highly relevant projects in the aeronautical sector. Our participation reflects the recognition for the excellence and experience we have built over the years, always guided by commitment to the customer and innovation,” said Cesar Silva, CEO of Akaer.

The company, the only one in the country qualified as a Tier 1 Global Supplier in the aerospace sector, will be responsible for assembling the fuel tanks for the two aircraft and the pylons (structures that support the turbines) for the C-390.

Partnership

The new contract consolidates a long history of cooperation between Akaer and Embraer – a partnership that has contributed to the development of innovative projects, reinforcing Brazil's prominent position in the global aeronautical scenario.

Akaer has participated in models such as the Super Tucano, a world-renowned light attack and military training aircraft, and the E-Jet family, a success in the commercial aviation market.

It also worked on the development of the C-390 itself, being responsible for the design of critical parts, spoilers (movable surface of the wings used to reduce the speed of the aircraft upon landing), front fuselage, tail cone and vertical empennage.

The freighter has become a milestone in military aviation and one of Embraer's major bets in the defense sector. In addition to Brazil, the model has already been purchased by the Netherlands, Hungary, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Austria, Sweden and South Korea.

With a payload of 26 tons, a maximum speed of 470 knots (870 km/h) and state-of-the-art avionics, the C-390 is considered the best aircraft in its category in the world. Its powerful engines, large cargo compartment equipped with a rear ramp and robust landing gear allow it to perform the most demanding missions on unpaved runways.

Business aviation

The Praetor 600, a business jet that is a benchmark in innovation and performance in the super-midsize category, will also be produced with the participation of Akaer.

With capacity for up to 12 passengers, it has an intercontinental range of 4,018 nautical miles (7,441 km), the longest among models in the segment, which allows for nonstop flights between São Paulo and Miami (USA), between Rio de Janeiro and Fort Lauderdale (USA) or between Madrid (Spain) and Recife.

With global certification since 2019, the Praetor 600 has a competitive edge in the executive market by operating on short runways.

Akaer
With 32 years of experience, Akaer has established itself as a reference in engineering and innovation in the Brazilian and international aerospace sector.

The company has a portfolio of 9 million engineering hours dedicated to the development of aircraft systems and structures in more than 50 globally renowned projects.

Albatroz: military drone with 100% national turbine will be able to perform missions at 40,000 feet
The new version of the Albatroz, a military drone developed by Stella Tecnologia, will be able to perform missions at an altitude of 40,000 feet (approximately 12,000 meters).

The information comes from the manufacturer's founder and CEO, Gilberto Buffara, who is participating this week in the BID Brasil Showcase, in Brasília.

Originally equipped with a combustion engine, the Albatroz has gained a prototype with turbines developed with 100% national technology by Aero Concepts, Stella Tecnologia's partner in the project.

The new configuration will allow the aircraft to reach a speed of 250 km/h in critical missions that demand high performance and range.

“It will be able to fly at altitudes higher than Mount Everest [the highest mountain in the world, located in the Himalayas, at 8,849 meters high],” said Buffara.

The Albatross is one of the highlights of the BID Brasil Exhibition, which runs until Friday (6) at the Ulysses Guimarães Convention Center. The aircraft is on display at the Aero Concepts stand, the turbine manufacturer (South Wing, S41 and S43).

On Tuesday (3), the Minister of Defense, José Múcio Monteiro, visited the space and learned details of the project.

Versatility

The Albatross was developed by Stella Tecnologia to transport sensors, radars and small missiles.

At 4 meters long and 7 meters wingspan, it stands out for its versatility. It can be operated on runways less than 150 meters long, including vessels carrying loads between 6kg and 50kg – its maximum take-off weight (MTOW) is 200kg.

“The Albatroz was designed to perform missions from the Multipurpose Aircraft Carrier Atlântico, following specifications from the Brazilian Navy [which will receive the first prototype],” stated the CEO of Stella Tecnologia.

“The aircraft’s configuration allows, for example, the inspection of long stretches of sea and land. And with a small flight platform, it is easy to operate and transport,” he emphasized, noting that the military drone has topography sensors.

New Albatroz

The new version of the aircraft was possible thanks to the partnership between Stella Tecnologia and Aero Concepts, announced in April of this year during FIDAE, an international fair held in Chile.

This is the first time that turbines developed 100% in Brazil have been applied to smaller flight platforms, such as medium and large drones, a milestone in the national defense industry.

“These are 500-newton turbines. This technology has already been used in Brazilian missiles, but had not yet been applied to an unmanned aircraft,” said Buffara.

“For this new configuration, it was necessary to recalculate, for example, the engine’s consumption. The turbine is lighter and more powerful, but has a higher energy consumption than the combustion engine. The aircraft’s temperature control was also adapted for this version.”

The next stage of the project is certification by ANAC (National Civil Aviation Agency). Flight tests are expected to take place in early 2025.

“Since we have already received authorization for tests with the combustion engine, I believe the process will be faster. It is the same aircraft. Only the propulsion system has changed,” said the CEO of Stella Tecnologia.

“This new version of the Albatroz is also a test platform. From it, we will launch other aircraft with different applications, including loitering munitions [also known as suicide drones],” he added.

“With this same turbine, we will be able to develop versions capable of flying at up to 700 km/h.”

The Albatroz is the second largest large UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) manufactured in Brazil. The first is the Atobá, also developed by Stella Tecnologia, with 8 meters in length, 11 meters in wingspan and a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 500 kg – due to its characteristics, it requires larger landing strips, 400 meters long.

“It is a strategic sector with enormous growth potential in our state. This cluster already generates 400 jobs and has reached 17 million dollars in exports. In Guanajuato, the aerospace sector ranges from drone design and manufacturing to laboratory testing and precision machining, with a strategic presence in municipalities such as Celaya, León, San Miguel de Allende, and Silao,” said Cristina Villaseñor.

The Bajío Aerospace Cluster aims to contribute to the development of the aeronautical and aerospace sector in Guanajuato, through initiatives focused on integration into the supply chain, talent development, promotion of state capabilities, and internal strengthening of the cluster. Currently, the Guanajuato Cluster is the fourth most important at the national level and continues to work to facilitate the incorporation of local suppliers into the sector, foster interest in the aerospace industry among students, and attract key investments.

ATG Additive Manufacturing is a company dedicated to the design, development and manufacture of metal additive manufacturing (AM) parts through the PBF-L (Powder Bed Fusion by Laser) process, also known as DMLS or SLM.

Celaya, Gto. Speqtrum Aerospace is dedicated to the manufacture of cargo door frames for Boeing 737 aircraft, engine parts, aircraft wing components, rails that support the trunk and hatches, among others. Most of its production is exported to the United States.


The company began operations in Celaya with 20 people and has currently hired and developed 104 people, highly specialized human capital.

After the exchange of information, municipal authorities and managers took a tour of the plant to learn about the production processes.

The municipality of Celaya has among its objectives to promote the development of the aerospace sector, in the search to continue diversifying the economy.
