Most accidents happen during landing and take off. This was one of them. There was no fire or anything in the engine, maybe it just couldn't generate enough power and stalled.

Bird hit maybe but I think very low chance.

It's the fire that would have caused deaths and from the looks of it, the fire did not reach the mess.
Every student in there should be safe barring minor injuries.

Ek to these air india engineers are still in the sarkaari chalta hai attitude era. Tata failed to overhaul the work culture in ai. The engineers ignore so many things, and we have seen in the past too.
