Aircraft Crash Notification

AN-32 itself on the way out. Cannot expect good spare support since Ukraine went for the toss. Hope the C-295 will supplement the fleet.
But only 56 ordered to replace about 100 of these. Why go for tranches route when situation is so dire. Bigger order can also mean more workshare and TOT for local partners.

Because IAF hasn't decided yet whether to use the C-295 as a transporter or wait for the MTA , the reason being the C-295 is supposed to be a replacement for the Avros which was more of a personnel transporter than a material transporter.

All this when Indranil Roy has been highlighting the point since years that the Avros airframe are good enough to go on for another 2 decades & only needs upgradation in engines & avionics.

One doesn't even know how this demand was forwarded by IAF & how was it accepted by MoD in the face of plenty of other pressing & critical demands.

God , the IAF , MoD & GoI work in mysterious ways.

Tow weight of C-295 is higher than An-32s. I don't see why it can't replace them as well. But personally I think it will be better if we switch to C-130Js for MTA instead.

HS 748 Avros are ancient fuel-guzzlers. I don't think any program exists to modernise them.

R&D and testing required for their modernisation (adding MFD, new engine, comms., weather radar, etc.) will not be worth it.

In technical domain, it is often easier & faster to create a new system than to modify and old, existing system to new standards.

I think we ought to keep this thread exclusively for military plane crashes in India . Every time this thread comes up my heart skips a beat.

Nope, there are 5-6 crashes per year only. It will be a dead thread.

The IAF has come up with a brand new criteria for transporters. I believe Rohit Vats articulated it some time back. I've forgotten what it was but upto 25 tons was supposed to be handled by one set of transporters followed by another transporter for anything between 25-45,000 & finally > 45,000 for the last set
of transporters.

In any case if the C-295 is the go to replacement for the An-32 , why're the IAF & GoI dragging their feet on it . It'd mean ~ 80-100 additional nos of C-295.

That's his pet hobby , everytime he gets an opportunity to talk about it . On the face of it , it makes much more sense as costs wise it'd be much more economical to refurbish the Avros with new TP engines apart from avionics etc than going in for new procurements like the C-295 given those airframes still have plenty of life left in them & those are sturdy frames from yester years with the build quality of that era which I'd trust much more than the composite stuff coming out now.
