What happened to the people of Tibet after the Chinese occupation has left deep scars on the Indian psyche—whether anyone likes it or not. Tibet is an inseparable part of the broader Hindu civilization and is far more culturally and spiritually aligned with India than it will ever be with China. Over 1.2 million Tibetan refugees still live in India. While the Indian government may have officially recognized Tibet as part of China, the average Indian never will—nor will the average Hindu, Jain, Buddhist, or Sikh.
