TIANJIN, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- A series of innovative products from Airbus are being exhibited, including the new generation A350F freighter model, the new generation A330neo widebody aircraft cabin and the H175 helicopter model, at the ongoing 15th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition, also known as Airshow China, in Zhuhai, south China's Guangdong Province.

Decarbonization and sustainability have become the keywords for the aviation giant's participation in this year's exhibition.

"We focused on demonstrating products that can meet the needs of China's passenger and freighter markets, as well as the latest results of our R&D cooperation with partners in the field of sustainable development," said George Xu, Airbus executive vice president and Airbus China CEO.

The display of decarbonization features has yielded promising results. At the airshow, Airbus Beijing Engineering Centre signed a MoU with Chinese partners, aiming to turn "waste" into "treasure" by co-developing natural-fiber seat cushions from coconut fiber.

In the future, such cushions are expected to be used in aircraft cabins. Recycling coconut fiber, which features light weight, breathability and high elasticity, can reduce the environmental impact of aircraft interiors throughout their life-cycle, achieve waste utilization, and support the circular economy development of China's civil aviation sector.

Airbus is also contributing to China's development of the circular economy. In January this year, Airbus launched the Airbus Lifecycle Services Centre (ALSC), its first global aircraft recycling project, in southwest China's Sichuan Province. It started to dismantle and recycle the first aircraft in August this year.

It provides services including parking, storage, maintenance, upgrading, modification, dismantling, recycling and distribution of used and usable aviation materials after dismantling for aircraft of all ages, said Xu.

ALSC has become the first entity to break through the technical bottleneck in aircraft composite material recycling and explore the feasibility of recycling more materials with partners, Xu added.

Moreover, Airbus has made efforts to increase the use of new energy and optimize the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) industry ecosystem.

Airbus has started to use 100 percent renewable electricity at its Tianjin and Beijing campuses, making the region the first among other Airbus campuses in the world to make full use of renewable electricity. It is planned that 100 percent of renewable electricity will be used in all campuses in China by 2030.

Airbus Tianjin has also deployed the use of SAF for its delivery flights and test flights, and to support Chinese operators for commercial flights, while deepening cooperation with the Chinese government, industry and academia on SAF industrial development.

Airbus is committed to working with its Chinese partners to lead the decarbonization of China's civil aviation through advanced industry standards and continuous innovation in aircraft recycling, sustainable aviation fuels and other innovative technologies, Xu said.

Airbus looks forward to jointly building a sustainable future for China's aviation industry, Xu added. ■

On November 17, 2024, the first deep-sea drilling vessel "Dream" independently designed and built by China was officially commissioned in Guangzhou, marking a significant breakthrough in key technology and equipment for deep-sea exploration in the country.

The "Dream" vessel is 179.8 meters long, 32.8 meters wide, has a displacement of 42,600 tons, a range of 15,000 nautical miles, self-sustainability of 120 days, and can accommodate 180 crew members. It can operate in unlimited navigation areas across global waters, functioning normally in sea conditions of grade 6 and surviving safely in super typhoons of grade 16. The vessel meets the conditions for bridge passage and dock mooring in major global waters. It employs a "modular" design concept, overcoming several world-class technical challenges, achieving "multi-functionality" with a "small tonnage," and innovatively integrating various functions such as ocean scientific drilling, deep-sea oil and gas exploration, and natural gas hydrate exploration and trial production for the first time internationally. After two rounds of sea trials, the "Dream" has shown that its main performance indicators exceed design requirements, establishing an independent design and construction technology system for ultra-deepwater drilling equipment in China.

The drilling system of the "Dream" is internationally advanced, having jointly developed the world's first hydraulic lifting drilling rig that combines oil and gas exploration with core drilling capabilities. It features four drilling modes and three core sampling methods, meeting various operational needs for ocean drilling and deep-sea resource exploration, significantly enhancing overall drilling efficiency and hard rock drilling capacity, with a maximum drilling depth of 11,000 meters, which is expected to help global scientists achieve the scientific dream of "penetrating the crust and entering the Earth's deep interior."

The scientific research and experimental capabilities of the "Dream" are internationally leading, making it a mobile "national laboratory" at sea. The vessel is equipped with nine functional laboratories covering basic geology, paleomagnetism, inorganic geochemistry, organic geochemistry, microbiology, marine science, natural gas hydrates, geophysics, and drilling technology, with a total area exceeding 3,000 square meters. It features the world's first onboard automatic core transmission and storage system, meeting the research needs of all disciplines in the marine field. The "smart brain" of the vessel can analyze data from over 20,000 monitoring points in real-time, enabling intelligent monitoring of operations, intelligent collaboration in experiments, intelligent health assurance, and intelligent integration between ship and shore.

The commissioning of the "Dream" will provide significant platform support for China's deep-sea resource exploration, key technology equipment development, and for global scientists conducting ocean scientific drilling research. It holds great significance for accelerating the construction of a maritime power and a technological powerhouse, and for promoting the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

The "Dream" was initiated by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Natural Resources, with the China Geological Survey under the Ministry of Natural Resources responsible for specific organization and implementation, alongside multiple units including China Shipbuilding Group completing the design and construction tasks. The preliminary design was completed in May 2020, construction began in November 2021, and comprehensive sea trials were completed in October 2024. Additionally, a core storage facility for ocean drilling with the largest global storage capacity, two high-standard deep-water scientific research docks, and one multi-functional support vessel were built to provide strong support for the operation of the "Dream."
