If you look at the general incompetance of Pakis in any field compared to India, 2 questions come to mind.
1) Is the Pak military an outlier that's vastly superior to other Pakis and hence can go toe to toe with Indian military?
or
2) Is the Indian military subpar that for decades and until very recently, we considered Pakis to be our main rivals?
The recent freakout so many Veterans have had over "language" has made my opinion only firmer regarding these lingering doubts I've always had. Seems like the top brass is made up of snowflakes on our side. This obviously doesn't apply to soldiers on the ground who are made of steel.
I'll be honest. It is naive to think that Indian Army as an organisation is an outlier compared to paki or kanglu military considering all 3 were part of the same military before 1947/1971. All 3 of them fought together, bled together, won together. So why is it so that only 2 out of the 3 ended up being the way they are, ours didn't? Mainly due to strong civilian government agencies and institutions which rest of the 2 never had. That being said, our military isn't holier than the other 2 considering all 3 were one till a few decades back, sure its far better than the two, but far from perfection as well.
Paki military and its population is full of extremists and low IQ clowns and I'm saying this responsibly after hearing like thousands of them, my sample size is huge. They are the useful idiots of uncle sam to project power against India and middle east. There's a reason why pakistan's military is more than half the size of India despite having an economy and tax revenue nearly 2-3 dozen times smaller, forex reserves in single digits and net external liabilities as large as their actual GDP. Ideally it should've been having a military far smaller than even bangladesh but here's it having a bigger military than majority of NATO countries. They get IMF bailouts, debt rollovers, and aid one after the other despite failing all IMF conditions every single time. Uncle sam won't let them sink as paki army is a loyal dog of the US. Our military size is what it actually should be for our economic size, maybe a bit less than ideal.
Problem is that pakistan, being a fellow subcon nation has been ingrained as a rival in Indian minds that we can't get over them to focus on china. But pakis as I mentioned aren't weak, their US subsidised military is highly formidable and poses credible threat to India.
Also, a good chunk of our top brass were either born in what became west pakistan or have roots over there, so there's that (hatred/dislike more for pakis than chinis).
There are bad apples everywhere, almost all of our military personnel are brave sons of soils defending our motherland, but there are a few who have been compromising the efficiency in the forces. They don't want accountability because that will be counter productive to their careers and maybe their sources of informal income. Again, they are very few among all the forces, but they are influential enough. Such things exists in all militaries, ours won't be an exception. So, no the Indian military isn't subpar, they have been fighting with whatever they could use. Some blame also lies of Indian bureaucracy who despite having the powers have been unable to complete indigenous projects. We can't blame military for what happened with Kaveri engine or the P-75I project. This country has also produced cutting edge SSBNs and aircraft carrier.
