Clutterji is back with a timely episode of CTC on the state of Chinese shipbuilding prompted by a newly released report by the CSIS .
The highlight is the Chinese are building their Type 003 Aircraft Carrier at the same shipyard where a Taiwanese shipping company has contracted ~ 4-5 ships which'd be among the largest ships in Taiwan . The irony is unmistakable.
It gets better . Apparently a French VLCC is also being built at the same shipyard powered by Natural Gas whose tech was shared by the French company with the Chinese shipyard.
Apparently this is the MO in the ship building industry , for China's now gotten into the Cruise Liner ship building biz where these mega cruise ships which used to be built outside China earlier now has one of the cruise liner shipping company contracting these ships from China actually park 2 of their older cruise liners in the Chinese shipyard so as to give the Chinese ship designers & builders a proper idea of these cruise liner ships.
What's more the largest ship building corporation in China - the CSSC , a state company formed by merging 4 large state Chinese shipbuilding cos now gets ~ 75% of its revenue from building civilian ships mostly of countries who're in a confrontational relationship with China .
All this highlights the remarkable CMF - Civil Military Fusion which has been the corner stone of the Chinese ship building industry like it has been for a number of other sectors in China which has seen world domination by Chinese firms.
To think the CCP decided way back in 2001-02 during Zhu Rongji's premiership China'd be the number 1 ship building country in the world by 2015 where back then they didn't even have a 5% market share in the global ship building industry.
So what's a podcast on the Chinese ship building industry doing in a thread on the Indian civilian shipbuilding , you'd ask ? Well , while this has ominous implications for the entire world , we should derive the right lessons.
For one , after the Chinese experiment had so blind sided the west that they not only shifted assembly lines but also related tech , there's no way the west is going to repeat their mistake with us. Hence our meek posturing as far as military confrontation with the west goes helps is secure biz which may otherwise not be forthcoming in spite of our defiance on matters policy like the case of Russian crude in the war in Ukraine episode with the west.
The next aspect is the CMF which we seem to have completely ignored in our recent policy initiatives. Our biggest shipyards are in the public sector & given the slew of recent initiatives , everybody except the DPSUs seem to be scrambling to formulate JVs with the Koreans & the Japanese .
I could go on , trust you get the drift.
