Country flag
We cannot be dependent on foreign for critical natural resources like rare earths, lithium, petroleum, uranium, etc. This thread is for discussion of any recent discovery made in our country regarding any natural resources

They were saying same thing in pakistan . We have to wait and see . The claim is such that it's bigger than even guyana ! If it comes out as true that changes everything . We ll be selling oil to china , japan , se asia from our eastern coast .. Damn that changes the geopolitics for India and economic situation of India .

But just to remind people that such news keeps coming .. nothing happens .

Discovery is one thing. Offshore extraction is another whole issue, which takes time and effort.

This seems to be a nothingburger. Puri is just wishful thinking and this publication published it as some almost confirmed news.

one more angle which comes out is commercial viability of extraction, will the extraction be easy or some next level tech need to be invented. coz in the past mainland oil and gas reserves were explored but they were rejected as they were difficult to extract

can kerala's beaches be used for thorium extraction??

Extracting thorium can be far more expensive than extracting uranium. I do not think we will be able to utilize thorium anytime before 2050.

Below is the list of stages that need to occur before thorium can be used as a power generating source:

  • Stage 1: Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) These reactors use natural uranium, producing plutonium as a byproduct.
  • Stage 2: Fast Breeder Reactors (FBRs) The plutonium from Stage 1 fuels these reactors. FBRs are designed to breed new fissile material (Uranium-233 from Thorium). Thorium can be used as a blanket material around the core to capture neutrons and transmute into Uranium-233.
  • Stage 3: Advanced Reactors (utilizing Thorium-Uranium-233 cycle) This stage is where India's vast thorium reserves come fully into play. Advanced Heavy Water Reactors (AHWRs) or similar designs would use the bred Uranium-233 along with thorium to generate power in a self-sustaining cycle.

At the moment, I believe, we are at the stage number 2. As you can see, it is an extremely complex process. I think we are the only country that has come this far. If we can pull this off, we will be the only country to have thorium based nuclear reactors.

Ours is quite different from MSRs right? I think both US and China are going with Molten Salt Reactors.

India is done with the 2nd stage; we are about to commission a prototype of FBR. Now, we are into the 3rd stage -- design of MSR -- where molten salt will come into play. Molten salt is a coolant with a characteristic that it can withstand extremely high temperature. The fact that thorium can be dissolved into molten salt, facilitates the type of nuclear reactor design where molten salt can act as fuel and coolant both. This type of design is preferred because it minimizes the nuclear waste. And also, it is much safer because the operation can take place under much lower pressure.

Nope, not happening. First, we got to meet domestic demand which is at 5 million barrels per day. You meet that demand domestically, boom in one strike you cancelled $200 billion outflow from our forex. This will keep INR stable for a long time with inflation less than 2% like in developed countries. However, I am afraid we will be having a resource curse. The moment you find the black gold you bet every leech and parasitic scum from Congress to TMC to AAP to SP to DMK will start demanding lower Oil prices. We will lower Oil prices for votes and forget transitioning to sustainable renewable sources. Take a look at what Oil has done to Nigeria.

If we did find black gold and utilize the resources properly for let's say 40 years, then we can catapult ourselves quickly to middle income status. Parallelly I hope we also focus on EVs, fuel cells, green hydrogen, wind energy, and solar. We should be prepared for the day when Oil is no longer required or when we run out of it as well. That requires a stable government with sane minds who can think about the future of the country as well. As long as leeches and parasitic scum of dynastic parties exist I hope we don't find too much of black gold.

Mahanadi , konkan kerala , Godavari krishna and Andaman together might bring some import cuts but dont give enough stress on statement of minister .

ganga basin also had some petroleum reserves but that was ignored by ongc by saying its not viable to drill due to geographic difficulty
