it seems to be the case that, our prices are designed to be cheap because of our domestic economies of scale in consumables and vote bank politics in food, when our goods are imported into neighbourhood it comes at lower costs, which helps inflation prone bottom line segments of neighbourhood countries.

When the fiasco with Maldives happened in early 2024, one local who was interviewed on TV said they lost a $1 million contract for an Indian wedding. And many expensive Indian parties also got canceled.

The stereotype that Indians spend the least is a lie. In the US, I have seen many Indians in my local bars buy drinks for others. I have yet to see a Chinese do the same, and we have a quite a few Chinese where I live. My guess is that the Chinese are more frugal than the Indians.

The Maldives just hit 2 million tourists for 2024, a 9% growth over 2023 (despite a 35% decline in Indian tourists).

I doubt that they will be able to attract the same number of record Chinese visitors next year. Especially once Trump hurts the Chinese economy and exports.

It is lie that we spend less in US...yes we spend most on Indian products. Even today I buy Miswak or vico vajradanthi. Use medimix or mysore sandal sop. Most of indians do same. We go restaurants almost every week...spend more than $50 every visit
