I see Yameen reaching out for his version of "past events" as a net positive, probably he wants to tone town and patch up as well.
He is probably the last, and most anti-Indian + pro-Chinese in the Maldives chess board.
If he also mends ways, then Maldives problem is solved for next couple of years atleast.

The beauty of it would be Yameen, Muithoo or any one else in the future does INDIA OUT for votes, wins both the presidential and "house" elections, glazes China, Turkey and Pakistan till then

But turns around and ends up wagging his tail for India in the end :bplease:

Pleasantries and tail wagging doesn’t matter. What matters is boots on the ground geopolitical reality

We give stuff, they sign FTA with China

We are not in a position to compete with CCP in handling out doles to buy foreign leaders.

Need to have dirt on them.

Modi being a trader thinks that money can buy or mend anything. Geopolitics is far more complicated. Carrot must always be accompanied by stick (and a clear intent to use the stick when required).

Ye kya chutiyapa hai?
Mullahdweepi Opposition also denies
Ruling party also denies

Relationship between nation states is starkly different compared to the "uncle and aunties" squabbling over small things in one's residential neighborhood.

Geopolitics is not run in vacuum. Just like India, there are multiple global powers trying to influence/sabotage one another.

In the recent years, the Indian foreign policy has been changed to match the rising global stature and influence of India. India has turned towards a transactional approach compared to the old one that relied heavily on the "soft power" and "concessions (read bribery)".

Carrot and Stick works better than trying to win over every heart and mind.

I thought we had a much larger Maldives thread in the past, but could not find it. In any case, Lakshadweep GST collection in April 2025 went up the highest of all states and territories in percent terms. Still tiny, but pretty impressive to go from 1 to 5. Their population in the 2011 census was only 65,000.

Based on my experiences, while some Indians are frugal and obsessed with coupons and deals, the most generous people also tend to be Indians. In my local neighborhood bar in the US, a couple of Indians tend to buy free drinks (to both non-Indians and Indians) more so than anyone else. One of them probably spends $1000 a month on buying other people drinks. Have yet to see even one African American or Chinese American buy anyone even a single drink. Whites do it once in a while, but the Indians are the most generous.

And don't even get me started on massive show-off Indian weddings in foreign countries. When the India-Maldives fiasco first started, one of the local Muslims said his resort lost a huge $1 million Indian wedding contract.

Indian tourists to the Maldives are still 30 percent less than before in 2025. And I have a suspicion that their luxury resorts are suffering because of this problem. The Chinese tourists are not as generous as the Indians. Racist Maldivians in the beginning complained that they won't miss "cheap" Indian visitors. Bunch of imbeciles.
