A lot of issues then were linked to India's position during the cold war plus there's this institutionalised racism against India in western societies then especially the Anglosphere & the fact they hated Mrs Gandhi's guts.

Having said that there were no shootings involved then like you see now , the Sikhs were a much smaller populace numerically , mostly kept to themselves & didn't actively undermine the state as you see them do today.
