one silly question , is it the gun or the bullet that decides how long can a guy shoot??
like we hear ranges of rifles to be in 700-800m but can some special ammo with the same gun can hit targets well beyond that range? like say 1500m.

both, the bullet and the gun.

- propellent/gun power in the cartridge decides the pressure at which bullet leaves the barrel, weight of the bullet decides it's ballistic trajectory.

- design of the gun decides how efficiently the bullet emerges out of the barrel accounting for loss of energy, length of the barrel decides how much push a bullet gets from gun powder explosion before leaving the barrel, and the twist on the inner barrel decides rotation of the bullet during it's journey which has an implication on stability while traversing the distance.

if a rifle is able to hit a target accurately at 700-800m, it should be able to hit 1500m with adjustments to sight. but if you want a kill shot both at 700 and at 1500, then it would a specialist sniper rifle with appropriate ammo.

Combination of both the gun and bullet used. The muzzle velocity (influenced by the barrel design and length, propellant used in the bullet affects it). Similarly the type of bullet I.e HP, round nose, 5.56, 7.62, affects the aerodynamics. Then there's the ballistic coefficient and environmental factors etc that determine the range.
