Indian Economy (13 Viewers)

Indian mentality is that if you have 5 lakh rupees, dont buy a hatchback or compact sedan or second hand 4 wheeler but rather buy a 650cc bike just to showoff. Social status here is a big thing. Everyone now adays is buying suv. Sales are too low for sedans now.

on the previous forum before 2019 and 2024 elections, some of us were making an argument that lived reality of younger generation would be different from ours. since you are in education phase of your life, may be you could share your reality. leave out borrowed knowledge and borrowed wisdom from internet or elsewhere. just general observations.

highlights of my reality when i was growing up :

- travelled in coal , diesel and electric trains.
- my first AC railway travel was after i completed B.E
- my first air travel too was after getting job on company money
- other than metroes, airports were practically big asbestos sheds in most of the country
- rickshaws, private city bus and RTC bus were primary mode of travel. autos came later.
- luna, moped, bajaj scooter were primary mode for two wheelers. scooty, kinetic and bikes came later.
- owning ambassador, padmini and contessa means one is either rich or well connected. owning a royal enfield bullet was a status symbol.
- closed sewage was a rarity even in cities, open drains were the norm.
- carrying water to homes in pots and drums was routine in towns, before piped water started.
- for telephone landline, scooter etc. there used to be waitlist sometimes for years if one is not connected.
- good roads showing up in mid 90's.
- violence, terrorist attacks, riots, political assassinations(minor and major), bandhs, curfew were a monthly routine.
- earliest cellular phones used to be size of a brick. initially it was 15 to 25 ₹ per call, started dropping over a period of time.
- 12 hour power cuts and sometimes even for one or two days during peak summer was a thing.
- most police stations and govt buildings used to be dilapidated since they were built during british era, some still are in some places.
- all state highways had a lot of potholes.
- imported goods shops used to be a major thing basically smuggled goods shops, my first pepsi can was from these shops.

Used to happen till Leaderji ascended to the throne

Every year some city would be the victim of bomb blasts

Shows what difference it makes when the security forces and police are given free reign to do their job instead of being dependent on politicians for whom their green votebanks are paramount.

A good query but its just one part of the bigger problem.

The total PV sales seem to have plateaued around 3.5 lac sales per month. A 2.5% annual growth in sales volume. Its abysmal. So, Currently, I will like to know what can be done to increase ownership of PV.

Will lowering the taxes work? Afterall the lost revenue can be amortized over a few years from taxes on after sales services, spare parts, toll, fuel taxes, income tax(increased employment).

I think we should now come out of the scarce mindset. Govt. should be welcoming and appreciative of increased car ownership.
Apparently Gst on cars and bikes are 28% flat with additional cess on engine and size, ACs also have 28% GST, all three as categorised as "luxury and sin goods" lol 😂 😂 😂. Govt thinks these are luxury, some other things in 28% bracket are ciggerates and alcoholic stuff.

All mumbaikers know the feeling of looking underneath the seat every time while traveling using public transport.

i remember before leaderji came ie before 2014 when is was kid, i used to see delhi metro rakes used to have sniffer dogs smelling each and every bag, and at that time delhi metro only had blue, yellow, violet, green, red line which were in limited parts, after he came, we got a whole mission indradhanush

my observation in bihar from early childhood to now early adulthood is that highways and roads have become ultra ultra smooth, power cuts of 10+ hours was common, now we get hardly any power cut, internet was a huge issue, now i have 5g in my hometown and village. airport was a bus stand in patna, now we have a respectable terminal with 5 aerobridge.

most important is our living standard has increased across india, in 2014 our muddas were water, electricity and roads ie all basic necessity. now our criticism and muddas have changed to china like infra growth, why cant we have infra and tech like us, why cant we have a silicon valley with our own tech r&d. which means we have progressed

missed a lot of upgrades from 2014 to 2024 like everyone having bank account and upi, etc

Well, Here is what i had seen as i grew. I am from HR.

1. Streets: Most of the streets were laid with bricks very early in my childhood. I have faint memories of "kachhi gali". Most were laid with bricks.
2. Tap Water: Again faint memory of "water wells". I remember we had piped water in 2001 in our village. I was a child. So the tranistion happened when i was in elementary school. I still would see a few houses getting water from well. But i don't know when they just became extinct.
3. Electricity: Excellent improvement on this front. Used to be very long and frequent cuts. Now, The power cuts are too few and too short. I will still prefer it to become even more reliable. But, I think line losses prevent it. Their are still many villages and villagers who do not pay electricity bills. Just too many.
4. Organized Crime: Thankfully i don't remember if HR ever had crime syndicates. Yes petty crime was very common between 2004 to 213-14. Chain snatching was very big. But its now unheard of. But still chori continues.
5. Terrorism: Well, Unfortunately I did my higher education during peak terror time in Delhi. I was always worried about stray bomb in public places. My family will be very anxious during my delhi stay. I was not allowed to go out on public holidays and to very popular public places during peak time. So, I will skip any conversation on them.
6. Transport: I don't see much improvement in passenger trains, one or two new express services on my route. Electrification. I don't have larger frame of reference on railways. So, recency bias. Now, about road transport. Well, When i was child, Jeeps were very popular. State transport buses were few. Later transport buses grew and so did PV ownership. Now, PV and Buses are more popular while jeeps are rare. Local villages now rely on "chotta hathi".
7. Education: Downfall of govt. schools and rise of private schools. It happened in front of my eyes. Almost everyone now goes to private schools. Remote villages too have good sprawling private schools. Almost everyone now have a college degree. Engineering and medical are still very very popular.
8. Communication: Din raat ka antar. We had landline in our village home. They were few in village and people will fix timings. Later we got mobile too. I was told about waiting periods. However when i entered high school, i found myself getting the sim cards very easily on fraud documents. Yes, I had few fake numbers for prank calls. It was fun. I remember paying Rs 300 for a month's validity and around a 100 minutes call time. It was pretty expensive. Than came glut and now again prices are rising.
9. Consumer Goods: ACs were rare even in city, forget about villages. Now, every other home has atleast one window AC in our village.
10. PV Ownership: Saw the change from Cycle to Motor Cycle to now cars. Almost everyhouse have a two wheeler now. It has become essential like TV, Mobile, AC, refrigerator, fan, bulbs. Car ownership is a mix bag. Many families have cars but its penetration is still abysmal. I will prefer even more increase in PV ownership.
11. Open Defecation: It was very very common. I have defected in open in my childhood in my village even though we had toilets. I and my friends will go out together. It was like a play. We will do target drops from tree branches. However, It became rare as i became shy with each passing year and it was no longer as fun. People will still go in open. It was very very prevalent. Thanks Modiji for curbing this menace.
12. Trash: Hmm. What do i say the situation has changed since Swachh Bharat Mission. Earlier every open plot was a trash heap. Now, its collected from door step.
13. Gas Connection and Chullah: We have had gas connection from very old time. But still Chullah was very popular. It still is. However many people have now become comfortable with gas stoves. Noticeable difference on this front too.
14. Aesthetics: Well, uncovered areas between walls and road are now getting covered. High footfall sections are concretized. A recent phenomenon though.

I think Modiji has done a transformative job in increasing accessibility of universal services like clean water, fuel, surrounding, washrooms etc.

No wonder we have low inequality. I still will prefer him to upgrade his basic fundamentals and reassess ownership of PV, AC, refrigerators also as basic necessity for a quality living. Atleast for middle class. So, i will request him to lower taxes on them and stimulate ownership of more cars, acs and consumer durables.

Well sir then this is what I have seen growing up [I lived with my maternal uncle,(mama and nani in district headquarter) and regularly visited my ancestral village till 10yrs of age and than after with my parents.
Both In rajasthan.

Education:- had to move to maternal uncle in 2yrs age because there was no good school in towns near my village, I studied in English medium school throughout but initially government school(even my mother wanted to send me to one) and hindi medium school were very common but now private schools and English medium is new normal. We were treated as Einstein because we used to study in English medium school and could speak English (only kamchalau) but now it every second person can atleast understand basic English in villages.

Electricity:- I remember when I was 5yrs old, It was duty of my mother to place chimney (made from coughsyrup bottle filled with kerosene and had a cotton wick then torched to work as lamp but lasted while night) after dusk in ancestral village. In 2012 came lamps that charged during supply and then worked during powercut and also Kiran torches.after 2015 we had invertor and now power supply is regular expect 1or 2 hour cut in whole day.
In maternal house we suffered whole night powercut during summer but got investors in 2012 and now have 24/7 power supply. While living with parents in district headquarter even half hour powercut despite invertor feels like torture.

Transport :- traveeled in deisel end electric trains. Had first AC class travel in 2013 when 9yrs old. sleeper class and general class earlier were dirty with news paper, chips packets, groundnut peels; Now the coaches are much cleaner. Earlier before 2018 finding coaches with working charging socket even In sleeper class was impossible but now even general have working sockets. Lived in their 2 and 3 cities so never had experience of airport or terrorism.

Local travel:- from medium range travel public/private bus services ,jeeps, omni were used now these are replaced by personal vehicle and mahindra camper but still quality of buses have improved a lot from earlier bus whose every part was making his own song and was about to separate anytime . Short range travel from rickshaws replaced by auto and e rickshaw. Tractor is no longer a mode of transport which it was till 2018.

Water :- in village we had tanka [to store rainwater and used to bring tankers from farm borewell but since 2015 have indragandhi canal piped supply to each house never saw anyone carrying water on heads in oppose to public opinion on Rajasthan. In maternal city had seen piped supply since I gained senses. But RO in house is very common now earlier it was rare and every body used clothes and alum to filter water.

Electric equipment:- AC were rare refrigerator were small and single door, TV were like large dabba fast forward to now every house in village have double door fridge >32 inch TV, washing machine . Though not that common but for some AC are like essential (earlier in classroom even fan didn't used to work now we rant even if one AC is not working) .

Mobile :- landline was the medium to talk to my parents and grandparents as a kid. Parents had that nokia dabba and missed call were used to give signals (like bring vegetables , come home food is ready, time to bring milk from farm) call drops were common.first touchscreen phone came home in 2015 now every family member has his own phone that to touchscreen with unlimited calling. I used internet only after jio's unlimited scheme but still remember my father using mts dongle for internet. Had to go to rooftop to talk now network is universal (almost).

Pv ownership:- father had car In 2009 maruti 800 (only seccond in village ) maternal uncle had no bike till I wad 4 years old everyone now have bikes and even 60% village household have cars or campers . Having 2 cars in house is not uncommon and every other farmer in village have tractor even if he have very small peice of land.

Roads quality has improved as I shared earlier road connecting my village to nearest town was all potholes with concrete in between now it is first class earlier village had no drains and kuchha roads now they are upgraded to cc block roads with drains on both side. I guess that's it thanks for reading this long and investing your time.

This I think the next phase should be lowering the taxes on these goods ac, refrigerator, cars and getting the larger public to adopt these things

Offer to lease land at rs 1 for top 100 IT companies .. Makes sense because in return you get thousands of educated middle , upper middle class decent people who ll buy flats , eat in resturants , visit mall for shopping , buy electronic gadgets , drink alcohol , visit tourist places and so on ..

This is exactly what i wish the govt. to do. Their is a second order benefit of increased consumption. Poor people also benefit from it. They will be getting yesteryears premium products at throwaway prices.

It should be Bihar and UP rolling out these schemes.
Its good to see AP taking the lead. I hope other states will soon follow its lead.

huh...but i see opposite of this. if any indian hv 5 lakh rupee, most of them go for car. only young generation like me go for bike (royal Enfield interceptor 650). its not for showoff, but in 5 lakh u get basic car. so its better to buy a bike. nd we like riding bike is far better than car riding.
sedan low sales due to release of cheaper (6-7 lakh) SUV availability. In indian roads SUV is more suitable nd preferable than SUV. do u choose sedan over SUV? i always choose SUV, unless in option marcedes Maybach S 😍😂 avilable.

even if bihar rolls out it wont work, we still have 10-15 years to enter the services race

up should make pockets in noida, kanpur, lucknow, varanasi, etc and cash it for election as rozgaar generation for youth

Jumping into directly the service sector would just mean talented people from other parts would flock to these areas and the local people won't get jobs, a thriving manufacturing industry is far better for these areas

Its not only about IT offices. I mean they need to court any business. A business generates revenue for the govt.

Even if the IT offices relocate to BH. It still will benefit the BH. These people will be leaving in BH. Paying the local bihari house rent, shopping from local shops and so on. So, BH still benefits from courting even if its local population will not be directly employed. Indirect employment will benefit the BH. So, I don't see why are you circumspect about it?

Afterall, Something is better than nothing.

bihari politicans will probably roll out reservations in those positions before , companies set up branches there.
