I have never heard of anything like that before. So maybe it is unique to Telugus.Yes.
Telugus also believe that once a person visits Kashi, they must give up something they like permanently. Don't know if this belief exists throughout the country.
My grandmother went to Kashi in 2004 or 2005 and since then she stopped eating Guavas which were her favorite fruit.

instead of dumping fruits etc on roadside....why cant they serve it to animals around them? its not like they hv no vegetarian animal around them. even i see dogs etc like to eat mango. this is totally disrespecting food, which isnt our culture.What a tragic waste of precious mangoes—Why is transport so expensive? It’s a serious concern, and one can only imagine how much food is wasted across the country due to this issue.
