Indian Economy

It is the government's failure to be able to highlight this achievement, in this paper it's concluded that India has all but eliminated extreme poverty and inequality has actually declined but this news is not sweeping past news channel's and online journalism

Which type of inequality is the paper talking about? Income, consumption or wealth?
From the brief description, I think it is referring to consumption inequality.

Consumption is usually what we should look for when talking about inequality in country like ours, wealth is something built over generations, a villager with some ancestral land might have more potential wealth than a IT worker earning 20lpa ,living in a big city.

Pretty great paper, India saw good improvement in inequality and poverty even without mind-blowing growth in last decades.

A key part to that is the GoI's consistent policy in managing food subsidies and ensuring that food inflation does not exceed the ability of GoI to allow supply of subsidized daily nutritional packages that is sufficient to meet nearly or all of the average person's needs.

If GoI can figure out to provide cheap but sturdy functional 2 bedroom 1 bathroom with kitchen, plumbing including sewage disposal and electricity housing for every family, poverty would be practically eliminated.

Not sure if last part is sarcasm or not, but india desperately needs more housing blocks. Alot of slums can easily be developed into mid rise housing societies. Adani bhai is already laying framwork for future redevelopment of slums around the country.

Plus vertical growth allows more land for others stuff like beautification, civil infra.

One of the most retarded article I've ever come across

whole piece is about some guy on linkedn, whose founder of some angel investing firm,

"We won't have clean air and rivers like China".

according to the guy, india in 2050 won't have clean air and river like chyana . yep he predicted 25 years into future.

"We won't have clean air and rivers like China. China cleaned its air quality in 20 years, but India won't be able to do the same,"
you can check 2010 video from cities like beijing, shanghai being covered in thick fog, when the fuck did China solved these supposed issues 20 years ago. Air quality btw is still shit in alot of Chinese industrial clusters . its just how manufacturing of common stuff works :- https://aqicn.org/map/china/

He also pointed out that Indian cities would remain "chaotic, unplanned, and dirty, unlike China's gleaming, futuristic ones.
huh ?

"We won't be the world's factory and manufacturing powerhouse like China."
dumbass wants India to become world's factory but still bitches and whines about muh air, this guy is like a startup angel investor, who i guess doesn't know how manufacturing works.

This a article in a supposed business site, This is level of journalism in India. pickup what some random guy on linkden of all places is saying and project is as a professional opinion . you can see urself in the article , their entire story is based off a short linkedin post , no deep analysis, no data.

Online journalism is always the lowest of the low as it doesn't pay, That's why you have sites like NYT and Guardian begging for donations each time you visit that site, These sites usually work in a small commission basis where certain people are asked to write articles and there is no quality control so they can state any bs they want. The problem is this gets shared and eventually gets viral.

My suggestion is just follow some reputable journalists who write long form articles and just forget about the rest

No sarcasm here but sincere desire and hope.

houses looks like this

Please satisfy my sincere curiosity at work here.

how much does it cost to build each one? Is it earthquake and fire proof? Does it incorporate anti mold techniques and prevention of flooding techniques?

What is the plumbing like? Electricity? kitchen? do they make provisions for a fridge and washing machine?

I read the english report, "Operational Guidelines of PMAY-U".

I find this curious: "13. A beneficiary will comprise of husband, wife, unmarried sons and/or unmarried daughters. Families belonging to EWS/LIG/MIG segments, living in urban areas, shoudl not own a pucca house either in his/her name or in the name of any member of his/her family in any part of India."

Does this mean that the families living in this house provided under this scheme cannot own the house? That doesn't make sense to me. They need to feel ownership so they would want to take good care of the house.

Looks like Dehati Houses built by Semi-Literate Engineers& Poorly Skilled Workers. Even some African Countries have better skilled Construction workers than us. The lack of Standardization is another factor of rising costs.

You have to look at China that they are damn smart. Take a plan and print them infinitely instead of paying planners again and again.

Well getting serious, it not perfect but it's a start nonetheless.

- cost of the construction depends on the area, depending on the size of the plot it should cost 10-15k USD for these simple structures. govt gives 2-2.5 k USD subsidy to build their house. rest is subsidised loan.
- goal of this scheme is making sure those who used to live in huts/tiled houses(kacha) , giving them a RCC house(pucca)
- since these are RCC houses, they are no mould, earthquake and fire proof issues. if it was a flood prone area, their previous house wouldn't be standing, so we have to assume flooding is taken care of.
- modi govt has a policy of "saturation of services", so they will get cooking gas, electricity and water. rest of the utilities is upto the family.
- since the idea is to house the unhoused, they are checking if the beneficiary already has a RCC property or not. if the family wants to build more houses, they can do so with their own money and unsubsidized loan.

look at it from UN SDG goals perspective.

Individual houses looks like GOI giving money to upgrade themselves to concrete house. So people building to their own taste and claiming the amount. At core this project is to alleviate people living in Hut to proper buidling.

If trump by threatening to apply tariffs get our government off asses and get them to sign FTA with US and EU, that will be a great boon for India. One reason our exports are not competitive with Vietnam in these markets is because Vietnam has Trade agreements with both. Infact, in EU, both Bangladesh (due to least developed status) and Vietnam's textile products get access with very low tariff. Indian textile faces 12-16% tariff in EU.

Consumption is usually what we should look for when talking about inequality in country like ours, wealth is something built over generations, a villager with some ancestral land might have more potential wealth than a IT worker earning 20lpa ,living in a big city.

All three inequalities are equally important. Income inequality tells a lot about the labor markets or policies like taxation and wages where as consumption inequality becomes vital if you want to look into the quality of life and, finally, wealth inequality talks about structural disparities.

While it appears that consumption inequality has reduced, I don't think that income and wealth inequality has shrunk.

income inequality has dropped that's how consumption went up, our gini also improved over the period.

But people having more income means people have more money for consumption. The paper focused on the bottom 30% percentile and concluded their consumption increased, how do you increase your consumption without your income increasing?
