Was talking about "max" range of 40-50km.IMO 40-50 is too generous, I think thats the range for very low speed subsonic drone type targets when missile is lobbed high and then glides down. Cause Astra MK1 range at low altitudes was given as 12km against fighters, against incoming ffast missiles (high subsonic) that could be read as 20-25km ish.
And the 12km range sounds too low.
Even near sea level and against a running away(egress) fighter jet(supersonic with afterburner) it should be 25-30km distance between the carrier and target for the missile to have good kill probability.
And if the target(fighter, missile) is coming towards(ingress) the missile carrier, then the effective range increases a lot.
Even near sea level 40-50km can be expected.
Now you can also launch the missile way past it's effective range, once you get a firing solution, just to force the opponent fighter jet into defending.
So a max range of 50km and given antiship missiles will be coming towards you, the effective max range of 30-50km is realistic.
Remember once this vlsrsam is launched to take down the antiship missiles, and when it actually takes down the antiship missile, the anti ship missile would have moved closer by few kilometers to even 20+km If it's a mach2+ anti ship missile.
So if it's launched When the anti ship missile is at lets say 60km from the ship it can intercept it at 35-55km away from ship, depending on the speed of anti ship missile.
Unlike fighter jets that can run away from you, anti ship missile will come towards you.
