There are some population of brown bear in himalays . There are also black bears in NE areas . Sloth bears have large presence in down south .

Are Indian bears more friendly or benign? In Canada you wouldn't just go up to a bear, or offer food to one that comes fairly close. The risk is far too much. You are advised to face a bear and walk backwards, if one comes near you- don't turn your back and run, that is very dangerous. Or make loud noises while stretching yourself upward, it will make the bear turn away.

They are not benign .But they are not as dangerous as tiger as well . Usually they don't attack unless they see you as danger . I know of a asram which had a pet sloth bear . The district collector went there to see it and started holding it by neck and asked the photo grapher with flashed camera to take pictures . The bear freaked out attacked the collecter .. There were multiple rounds of fire by the bodyguards to kill the bear . At the end of the day the collecter had lost muscles in one side of ass , few muscles from the leg gone and got bitten in other places ..
