I was reading about Iran and learned Iran has one of the highest educated people in muslim world , probably second to Turkey . Most of them are decent in urban centers having good view about India and many from middle upper middle have studied here in india .. There is a stark divide between establishment and general public which you won't probably find in other countries .

During the rule of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Iran was transformed from a majority agricultural economy to one of industry and foreign exports. When mullha regime came they declared in their new sharia constitution
" economy of Iran must not be an end itself but rather a means to an end, the end being obedience to God."

state of Iran nationalized nearly all of the major players in Iran’s economy. we all have seen what such policy did to us in India . The lost decades of India and its after effects still persists . Iran had atleast oil and gas with it .

They really had bad luck .. If the islamic revolution and the iran-iraq war had not happened there could have been economy somewhere near japan/germany . In Iraq war alone they lost atleast 10 lakhs people and 100s of billions dollars . Loosing 1 million in a population of 4/5 crore (80s iran) is too much .
There has been also heavy capital flight since islamic revolution . And then came the nuclear adventure and sanctions . Trade restrictions over recent years did lots of damage as well .

The mullahs apparently capitalised on public frustration over Mossadegh's overthrow by the US & UK when he nationalised Iran's oil industry & in turn whose rule was sabotaged by the latter two.

Arguably it was a long time ago but his welfare measures , anti colonial thoughts & action struck a chord with the masses besides the fact that while Iran underwent great progress during the Shah's regime , the mullahs were a constant threat on one hand & the Shah's stifling of democracy & dissent while promoting crony capitalism marked by rampant corruption benefited only the connected & the elite.

The ordinary man didn't have too many avenues open for education or upward mobility. Resulting frustration kept growing & two of the most malevolent forces known to the modern world - Islamic theocracy & communism bloomed like evil flowers eventually joining hands with other anti Shah forces to overthrow him.

From the little I've read on modern history of Iran , while the Shah's regime was not particularly bad ( issue is subjective ), the current situation in Iran w.r.t the same issues are at the very least 10 times worse.

Youngsters & other able bodied men who can are making it out of Iran. That's another contributing factor to their reduced TFR .

On a personal note - Worked & befriended quite a few of them in the gulf when I was there. Intelligent guys , can offer competition to us in any field except the authorities in UAE or even Oman barely tolerated them .

The latter preferred us to the Iranians even when it came to Irani businesses though truth be told Iranians fancy themselves as if they're Europeans. They looked down on the sub continent folks & if you can believe it the Arabs in their own country.

Not exactly the most affable people out there at least from our PoV.

Same here . I stopped engaging after a couple of initial attempts earlier on when he turned repetitive & started arguing for its own sake .

In this case he started it . The problem with disengaging is some people just don't have the EQ & not necessarily the IQ to appreciate the reasons behind the disengagement. In his case he's severely deficient in both .
