Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, Najib’s lead defence counsel, claimed on Monday that the former prime minister’s ousting had been “engineered” by leaders of the US Democratic Party with the aid of Malaysian “VIPs”.

“Until today, that forfeiture proceeding is never tried… It’s just allegations,” Shafee told a news conference outside the court.

“But you must know, the US is involved in all kinds of regime change throughout the world. You must know that. Don’t be made a fool of again.”
